What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a part-time worker, you generally need reliability, time management, a willingness to learn, and the relevant educational or experience requirements for the specific role. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, scheduling software, or other job-specific tools is often beneficial. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that help part-time employees integrate quickly into existing teams. These skills and qualities are important because part-time roles often require flexibility and the ability to contribute effectively within limited hours.

What are part-time jobs?

Part-time jobs are positions in which employees work fewer hours per week than full-time employees, typically less than 35-40 hours. These jobs often offer more flexible schedules, making them ideal for students, parents, or anyone needing to balance work with other commitments. Part-time roles can be found in a variety of industries, such as retail, food service, healthcare, and administration. Benefits and pay may vary compared to full-time positions, and some part-time jobs may not offer benefits like health insurance or paid time off.

To overcome these, it's helpful to communicate availability clearly, proactively seek feedback, and express interest in professional development opportunities. Building strong relationships with colleagues and supervisors can also lead to greater flexibility and consideration for future full-time roles. Job description

Founded in 1988, Food & Friends provides medically-tailored meals, nutrition support, and friendship to people living with AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses. Our team of seventy employees and thousands of volunteers delivers meals and hope to people living in the District of Columbia and multiple counties across Maryland and Virginia. There is no charge or income qualification for our services, which are rendered solely on the basis of medical need. Food & Friends is proud to be a nationally-recognized leader of the Food is Medicine movement.

We seek a part-time Delivery Driver (approximately 20-30 hours of work a week, daytime working hours). The Driver will:

  • load refrigerated cargo van with day’s deliveries;
  • deliver meals and groceries to client homes throughout the Washington Metro region;
  • offer a friendly greeting to clients; and
  • fill vehicle with gas and report any maintenance issues.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has a flexible schedule or broad availability during daytime business hours and finds satisfaction in helping others.

Requirements include a driver’s license (CDL not required) and good driving record, working knowledge of traffic and highway laws/regulations, ability to lift up to 30 lbs., familiarity with the Washington region, and good people skills. Prior professional driving experience strongly preferred. Must be able and willing to drive in a variety of weather conditions, including snow and ice. Offer of employment contingent upon a background check and pre-employment drug test.

Drivers make a starting rate of $21.64 per hour and contribute to Food & Friends’ charitable mission of helping neighbors in need. Due to the part-time nature of this position, benefits not included.

To apply, please submit resume. Food & Friends is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
