POSITION SUMMARY:
The Youth Sports League Referee is responsible for officiating the assigned league games scheduled to him/her by the Director of Youth Sports.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
He/she must demonstrate a basic knowledge of the rules and general game play for a variety of sports, including but not limited to soccer, basketball and volleyball; possess excellent communication skills; have a general understanding of the principles of youth development and age appropriate expectations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensure a safe environment for the players and spectators at events.
- Make correct calls based on generally accepted rules dependent on game situation and age group.
- Ensure first aid kit is fully stocked and accessible during all events.
- Complete incident/accident report as needed and turn in to supervisor with 24 hours.
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the game to check facility/field condition for possible risk issues; correct as needed.
- Obtain a qualified referee for games that he/she will not be able to officiate.
- Obtain and return YMCA equipment for the event; note any equipment issues and report and correct as needed.
- Ensure all game areas are clear and free of trash at the end of the event.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Current high school student or graduate, 2 years experience in either playing or officiating said event. Basic knowledge of specific sport rules in which you referee.
- Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and procedures and safety information; be able to speak effectively with staff and program participants.
- Must have knowledge of basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions and decimals).
- Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding; deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.
- Basic knowledge of PC skills, including Word, Excel and Outlook
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift up to 30lbs. on a regular basis; must be able to walk, run, sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, pull, stoop, crawl, crouch, talk, use hands and climb or balance on a regular basis. Must be in physical shape to allow for moving up/down the field (court).
Work Environment:
- Person will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
- Person will be exposed to moderate noise outside and in the gymnasium.
- Person may be exposed to electrical discharge in gym from lights and/or outlets
- Person may be exposed to outside weather conditions
- Person may be exposed to structural problems with tents or fences
- Person will be exposed to moving objects (ex. Soccer ball)
