Part Time Theatre Stage Manager Jobs (NOW HIRING)

Position Summary:   

The Ruth Theater is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Deck Lead to join our production team. As a vital member of backstage operations, the Deck Lead ensures the smooth execution of technical elements and scene changes during rehearsals and performances. This role oversees and coordinates the deck crew, manages backstage cues, and maintains clear, proactive communication with Stage Management, cast, and crew. 

Duties and Responsibilities:   

• During the show: 

• Serve as the Deck Crew Lead during performances, coordinating with the deck crew and actors to ensure a smooth show.  

• Act as a primary point of contact between cast, crew, and production team while backstage. 

• Facilitate clear and timely communication between Stage Management, crew, and other departments. 
• Work closely with the Stage Manager, deck crew, and fellow backstage crew members to ensure a safe, efficient, and smooth performance, both onstage and backstage.  
• Perform scene changes quickly, quietly, and accurately while following the Stage Managers cues.  

• Maintain, track, and assist with the upkeep, organization, and appearance of all props through the production process.  

• Ensure all scenery, props, and stage elements are preset before each performance and returned to their designated spots following the show.  

• Assist with the setup, operation, and strike of scenery, stage equipment, and backstage workspaces for rehearsals and performances.  
• Conduct regular safety checks of the stage, moving scenery, fly system, and backstage areas before and during performances.  
• Follow, maintain, and update all run paperwork, tracking sheets, checklists, and other production documents as needed. 
   
• Communicate clearly and professionally with the Stage Manager, board operators, cast members, and fellow crew members to ensure a safe, smooth performance.  
• Assist actors with any needs that come up throughout the production process.  

• Other duties as assigned 

• Fly System Operation: 

• Safely operate the theater's fly system to move scenery, curtains, lighting, and other stage elements during performances. 

• Execute all fly cues accurately and consistently with the Stage Managers cues.  

• Perform pre-show inspection of fly lines.  

• Follow all theatre safety protocols and procedures when operating the fly system. 

• Rehearsals and Technical Support: 

• Communicate schedule changes, notes, or updates from the production team to deck crew as needed. 

• Attend all technical rehearsals and provide support for the setup and adjustment of stage elements. 

• Assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues that arise during rehearsals and performances. 

• Participate in load ins, load outs, and theatre resets as scheduled. 

• Assist other departments when appropriate while maintaining your assigned responsibilities.   

• Safety and Professionalism: 
• Adhere to all safety polies when operating stage equipment, moving scenery, and working backstage.  
• Ensure all stage operations comply with industry safety standards and regulations. 
• Follow all safety procedures regarding automation, moving scenery, rigging, and the fly system.  
• Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and a positive attitude while representing the company.  
• Assist in conducting safety briefings and emergency drills as needed. 
• In coordination with the Stage Manager, oversee the completion and implementation of emergency procedures. 
• Ensure props, set pieces, and technical elements are properly maintained and safe for use, coordinating repairs as needed. 
• Attendance Requirements: 

• Must be available to work a minimum of 4-5 performances per week.  

• Attendance is required for all tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and assigned performances unless excused from Deck Supervisor.  

• Arrive on time and prepare for rehearsal, tech, and performances. 

Crew Supervision and Leadership 

• Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship for deck crew members. 
• Assist with training as directed by the Stage Manager or Deck Supervisor. 
• Jump into any role at any time in case of an emergency. 

Administrative Duties 

• Assist the Stage Manager and Deck Supervisor with developing and maintaining run sheets, shift plots, and crew paperwork. 
• Assist in the preparation and distribution of daily crew tasks and assignments. 
• Document deck-specific notes or performance issues for follow-up with the production team. 

Skills and Qualifications:  

• 2–3 years of professional backstage or technical theater experience. 

• Strong knowledge of backstage operations, including scene shifts, cue execution, and deck safety. 

• Demonstrated leadership skills with experience supervising and directing a deck crew. 

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with Stage Management and Technical Direction. 

• Familiarity with stage machinery, fly systems, automation, and standard theatrical tools. 

• Knowledge of backstage safety practices and willingness to uphold OSHA and industry standards. 

• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in maintaining run sheets, shift plots, and cue paperwork. 

• Ability to adapt to changes during tech and performance processes. 

• Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined or elevated spaces. 

• Proven reliability, punctuality, and professionalism in a fast-paced production environment.
