Job description

Under general direction from Center Manager, the GI Tech is responsible for the proper cleaning and high level disinfection and maintenance of all video endoscopes and other accessories used in the GI Endoscopy suites. Must maintain current knowledge and adherence to CDC’s Infection, Prevention and Control guidelines when handling blood and body fluids as well as OPIM (other potentially infectious materials). Is responsible for delegated patient care duties by assisting the physician and staff nurse during procedures as well as other duties/assignments expected within this role (see details below). Must maintain current BLS certification. Is responsible for daily preventative maintenance, monitoring and record keeping for equipment that has been sterilized and/or high-level disinfected.  Is responsible to contribute to this facility’s mission through active support of institutional philosophy, goals, objectives and values of the Center.

  1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Follows manufacturer instructions and Center policy & procedures for manual cleaning, decontamination, sterilizing and/or high-level disinfection of all GI equipment and accessories as needed for facility approved procedures. 
  2. Must be able to demonstrate proper manual cleaning, decontamination, high level disinfection and storage of all GI scopes and accessories in accordance with nationally selected guidelines of the facility.
  3. Must be able to operate the Ultrasonic unit in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines.
  4. Correctly sets up GI suite and ensures that all equipment is functional prior to procedure.
  5. Assists the physician in simple non-sedated procedures such as sigmoidoscopy.
  6. Assist the physician with assigned GI procedures (ie, EGD, Colonoscopy, EUS etc.), these will be performed under the direct supervision of the attending GI endoscopist:
  7. Apply abdominal pressure (ie, manipulate the abdominal wall of a patient, commonly called splinting, in order to facilitate advancement of the video endoscope through the intestine).
  8. Ensures that the patient has been properly grounded and that all electro-cautery equipment is functional prior to use.
  9. Ability to utilize biopsy forceps/snares for the removal of specimens and ensures proper labeling of the same.

·         Checks to make sure that all irrigation fluid is properly labeled.

·         Maintains basic knowledge of trouble-shooting endoscopic equipment as needed during a procedure.

  1. Must be able to enter patient-related data into the endoscopic databases and the center’s electronic health record (as applicable).
  2. Maintain involvement with medical supply inventory, monitors par levels, restocks needed items and checks expiration dates.
  3. Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all Board of Managers approved facility policies/procedures.
  4. Assists in all rescue and/or resuscitative efforts as deemed necessary by attending physician, anesthesia provider, and/or Center Manager.
  5. Ensures that all equipment and supplies are available as needed for procedures.
  6. Assists with the following additional duties – faxing pathology and ensuring timely signatures by providers, performing QA on pathology, submitting scopes for repair, assisting pre-op nurse with phone calls/messages, assisting in the office setting as needed, assisting in other departments within the center (such as recovery) as needed, assisting with facilitating/completing all repairs, maintenance and cleaning of medical equipment, assisting with ensuring all annual competencies and trainings are completed, etc.
  7. Promotes teamwork and unity across all departments.
  8. Assisting with facilitation of efficient operations within the scope and procedure rooms.
  9. Ensures all policies and procedures related to the scope and procedure rooms are being followed.
  10. Assisting with providing in-services, staff meetings and training within the scope and procedure rooms. 
  11. Assists with monitoring and resolving all issues related to specimens and pathology.
  12. Coordinating with Director of Nursing, Practice Manager, and Board to ensure high-quality patient care is being met within the scope and procedure rooms.
  13. Assisting with all aspects of accreditation surveys related to the scope and procedure rooms, when necessary.
  14. Properly disposes of wastes following procedures.
  15. Works well within a team environment.
  16. Recognizes and utilizes safety precautions.
  17. Performs other duties as requested or assigned. 
  18. Is supportive of Administrative decisions. This includes conducting duties in accordance with all policies and regulations affecting one’s job and reporting all concerns or violations of the center’s policies, local and governmental regulations.

Required Skills
Required Experience

1.   High school education or equivalent.

2.   Demonstrates strong comprehension of asepsis and sterile technique.

3.   Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with physicians and all medical professionals.

4.   Current certification in BLS.
