Job Summary

The Learning Support Specialist (LSS) supports the operation of Student Academic Support Services by providing professional tutoring services and assisting with carrying out academic support programs and services. The LSS works with SAS/Tutoring administration and staff to ensure efficient program operations, including scheduling, providing information, and taking part in outreach activities as needed. The LSS tutors are in an area of academic credentials and expertise, usually for introductory courses, in person, one-on-one or in small groups, to help students attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned subject matter. The LSS must be able to work with others present in a shared space. The LSS must have a strong command of the subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using a variety of methods. Applications accepted in a variety of subject areas; position filled as needs arise.

Tutoring

  • Supplements students' understanding and command of the course material for which students seek assistance, outside of class.
  • Tutors for introductory courses in the discipline area of expertise only.
  • Helps students develop and apply appropriate learning and study skills.
  • Meets with students at appointed time.
  • Assists with training and mentoring Peer Learning Success Leaders as needed.

Administrative/Clerical Functions

  • Assists with daily operations of the Tutoring Center.
  • Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions.
  • Generates reports for tutoring and maintains documentation of department tutoring interactions.
  • Proficiently uses and implements the College's tutoring and record-keeping software.
  • Assists with SAS/Tutoring Services marketing and outreach activities.

Continuous Learning

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles.
  • Attends tutor and staff training sessions.

Culture of Respect

  • Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and welcome for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree, Academic or professional certification, or higher degree in academic field of expertise.
  • Six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, Supplemental Instruction experience, or equivalent related learning support experience.

Additional Information

  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
