Laborer I (Part-time Seasonal) Parks and Pools

The Town of West Hartford announces an open competitive examination for the position of Laborer I (Part-time Seasonal) Parks and Pools. Applications will only be accepted electronically. Salary range: $16.94 - $21.94/hour. Position open until filled.

Job Purpose: To perform unskilled and semi-skilled work of a manual nature in various Town operations. Employees in this classification work under the general supervision and/or direction of Town personnel.

Work Environment: Work is generally performed under general direction and/or supervision. Work involves moderate risks and/or discomforts which requires safety precautions. Work requires frequent physical exertion to repair and maintain town parks, pools and facilities. Frequent need to dig, shovel, bend and lift weights of up to 50 pounds repetitively. Will be exposed to noise, dirt, outdoor temperature and weather extremes, and other uncomfortable and disagreeable conditions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform routine pool maintenance, including water testing and general upkeep.
  • Assist with landscape maintenance such as mowing, trimming, and grounds care using a variety of hand and power tools/equipment in and around municipal properties.
  • Conduct janitorial duties in park and pool facilities.
  • Support general facilities maintenance as assigned.
  • Operate a town vehicle to travel between worksites.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Stand for extended periods while completing tasks.
  • Provides support and assistance to other municipal employees.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Performs the above responsibilities in the work environment described above.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions.
  • Sufficient strength and physical agility to lift and move objects and/or materials weighing up to 75 pounds. Digs, shovels, and bends extensively and otherwise performs heavy physical labor.
  • Ability to meet the public in a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability and willingness to work under severely adverse conditions of weather, temperature, dirt or noise.
  • Willingness and ability to work under conditions of considerable personal hazard arising from the nature of tools used and amount and type of physical activity required.

Minimum Qualifications: High school graduate or an equivalent combination of education and experience in manual labor. Possession of valid Connecticut Driver's license preferred and a driving record in accordance with the Town of West Hartford Driving Policy. Note: In accordance with state and federal law, individuals under the age of 18 will be limited in the equipment/machinery they are permitted to use or functions performed. Hours of work will also be in conformance with state and federal regulation.
