What is a physical therapy assistant internship?

A Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) Internship is a supervised, hands-on training program for students or recent graduates who are studying to become licensed physical therapy assistants. During the internship, participants work alongside licensed physical therapists and PTAs in clinical settings to gain practical experience, develop clinical skills, and apply knowledge learned in the classroom. The internship is a crucial component of physical therapy assistant education and is often required for graduation and licensure. Interns typically assist with patient care, learn to use therapeutic equipment, and observe various treatment techniques. Successful completion of an internship helps prepare candidates for certification exams and future employment in the field.

What are physical therapy assistant internship opportunities?

During a physical therapy assistant internship, your temporary job is to shadow a physical therapy assistant and learn more about the tools, techniques, and strategies used in physical therapy. In your role as an intern, you may fetch supplies, help research specific conditions, or perform other miscellaneous tasks for the duration of your physical therapy internship. As a student, you cannot provide direct care or rehabilitation to patients, but you may be allowed to experience the same exercises and techniques to get hands-on experience with how it feels to go through physical therapy. Most of these internships are available during the summer, but people receive physical therapy throughout the year, so you may be able to find an internship at other times as well.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect during a physical therapy assistant internship?

As a Physical Therapy Assistant Intern, you will typically gain hands-on experience by assisting licensed physical therapists and PTAs in patient care activities. This can include helping with therapeutic exercises, observing patient assessments, setting up equipment, and learning proper documentation. Interns often rotate through different specialties or patient populations, such as orthopedics or geriatrics, to broaden their clinical exposure. You will also have opportunities to develop communication skills by interacting with patients and collaborating with the rehabilitation team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a physical therapy assistant intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Physical Therapy Assistant Intern, you need foundational knowledge of anatomy, therapeutic exercise, and rehabilitation techniques, typically gained through relevant coursework and enrollment in an accredited PTA program. Familiarity with physical therapy equipment, documentation software, and safety protocols is also necessary. Strong communication, teamwork, and active listening are vital soft skills for building rapport with patients and collaborating with supervising therapists. These skills and qualities are important to ensure effective patient care, smooth clinic operations, and successful learning outcomes during the internship.
