Position Summary

The Inserter supports newspaper production and distribution by operating inserting, labeling, and mailing equipment to prepare newspapers for delivery. This role is responsible for stacking newspapers off the press, inserting preprints and inserts, bundling, labeling, and preparing skids for distribution. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and willing to learn equipment setup and adjustments in a fast-paced printing and mailroom environment.

This position is essential to ensuring accurate newspaper assembly, quality control, and timely distribution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate inserting machines, labeling machines, and related newspaper production and mailing equipment.
  • Stack newspapers as they come off the press and perform inserting and bundling tasks
  • Straighten, jog, and align newspaper bundles to ensure neat, accurate preparation
  • Strap bundles and shrink-wrap skids as required for distribution
  • Assist with equipment setup, adjustments, and basic troubleshooting
  • Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the work area and production equipment
  • Handle newspapers, inserts, and materials efficiently while following safety guidelines and production procedures
  • Monitor product quality and report defects, equipment issues, or safety concerns to supervisors
  • Work collaboratively with press, mailroom, and distribution teams to meet production deadlines

Education & Experience

  • On-the-job training provided

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Newspaper production and mailroom environment with exposure to machinery, moving parts, paper dust, and noise.
  • Fast-paced, deadline-driven setting requiring consistent workflow and attention to detail.
  • May require working early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays depending on production schedules.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift bundles or stacks of printed materials.
  • Regularly lift and move up to 25–35 lbs; occasionally up to 50 lbs with assistance.
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment and handle printed materials.
  • Must be able to work safely around presses, inserters, conveyors, pallet jacks, and forklifts
  • Ability to work in warm or cool warehouse-style conditions depending on season.
