How does a part time network engineer typically collaborate with full-time IT staff and ensure seamless network operations?

Part-time network engineers often work closely with full-time IT staff by attending scheduled team meetings, maintaining thorough documentation, and utilizing ticketing systems to track network issues and updates. They may need to coordinate their hours to provide support during peak times or planned maintenance windows. Effective communication and clear documentation are key to ensuring that handoffs between part-time and full-time team members are smooth, minimizing downtime and ensuring network reliability.

What is the difference between Part Time Network Engineer vs Network Technician?

AspectPart Time Network EngineerNetwork Technician
CredentialsCertifications like CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNASimilar certifications, often CCNA or CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentPart-time roles in IT departments, consulting firms, or managed service providersOn-site or remote troubleshooting, installation, and maintenance tasks
Employer & IndustryBusinesses needing flexible network support, telecom companies, IT service providersOrganizations requiring routine network setup, repairs, and diagnostics

Both roles require similar certifications and work in comparable environments, often within IT or telecom industries. The main difference is that a Part Time Network Engineer typically handles more complex network design and planning on a flexible schedule, while a Network Technician focuses on routine maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and common protocols, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, routers, switches, firewalls, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to manage time independently are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure reliable network performance, efficient issue resolution, and the ability to support business operations with flexibility.

What is a part time network engineer?

Part time network engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain computer networks but work on a reduced or flexible schedule instead of a standard full-time workweek. They may be responsible for tasks such as troubleshooting connectivity issues, configuring network devices, and ensuring network security, but on a part-time basis. This role is ideal for individuals seeking work-life balance, students, or professionals wanting to supplement their income while contributing their technical expertise to organizations.

What does a part time network engineer do?

As a part-time network engineer, you design, install, and maintain network infrastructure for a company or organization. As part of your responsibilities, you configure systems and hardware, monitor network activity, implement disaster recovery and backup solutions, and provide support to users. As a part-time worker, you may either work for a company whose network and IT needs do not necessitate your full-time involvement, or you may be brought on to support an existing IT department that needs additional engineers for specific projects or purposes. In either case, your employment status does not affect your overall duties as you design and administer vital IT infrastructure and ensure secure, uninterrupted access to business critical data.

Solution Architect
The Opportunity:
Everyone is trying to "harness the cloud," but not everyone knows how. As an experienced cloud computing infrastructure architect, you know how to take advantage of cloud capabilities. Here, you'll oversee our team of experienced professionals and use cutting-edge enterprise cloud platforms to guide your clients as they modernize their IT infrastructure and meet their most challenging missions. We're looking for someone like you to help enhancing the environment for our warfighters.
You'll collaborate closely with fellow cloud architects and engineers specializing in Office 365, Azure, AWS, GCP to design, define, develop, test, and debug cloud solution components. You'll have the chance to broaden your experience within a DevOps framework to create and manage container apps and use products like Kubernetes to further the mission. With access to our internal Azure, AWS, and GCP labs, you'll have the space and time to explore different ways of solving our clients' problems, and you'll partner with stakeholders and lead your team to deliver the right technical solutions. Whether modernizing legacy computing platforms and applications or creating new ones from scratch, you'll have the latest tech and brightest teammates at your fingertips.
Grow your skills at the leading edge of innovation.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 10+ years of experience designing and owning implementation of cloud infrastructure in enterprise or mission environments, including networking, identity, compute, and storage
  • Experience with enterprise virtualization, distributed infrastructure, and data platform architecture, including environments operating under degraded connectivity, air-gap, or multi-tenant constraints
  • Experience with large-scale log management, security monitoring, or SIEM platform architecture, including designing from scratch, consolidating existing tooling, or migrating between platforms
  • Experience with DevOps practices and automation, including containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD pipeline design, including in restricted or classified environments where standard toolchains don't apply out of the box
  • Experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into engineering workflows or production environments, including surfacing LLM-backed tooling to extend what a small team can deliver
  • Experience making sound architectural decisions when the environment works against you, including restricted toolchains, contested network conditions, imposed timelines, or requirements that shift mid-execution
  • Ability to enter an unfamiliar technology, develop genuine working knowledge rapidly, and lead others through implementation
  • Ability to architect under ambiguity, own the outcome alongside engineers, and communicate decisions clearly to both technical teams and senior non-technical stakeholders
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience working across multiple cloud providers or classification levels on the same program, including navigating the translation between platforms
  • Experience on a large defense program or with a major systems integrator, including delivering under bureaucratic friction without losing technical momentum
  • Experience supporting DoD installations or integrating with mission or C2 systems across NIPR, SIPR, or coalition networks, including where the technical environment was inherited, undocumented, or both
  • Experience building agentic workflows, automation pipelines, or custom tooling that meaningfully changed what your team could ship
  • Experience in a technical lead or principal role where you were accountable for both the architecture and whether it actually got delivered
  • Experience operating on a tiger team, rapid response unit, or equivalent, parachuting into a problem, delivering under compressed timelines, and moving on cleanly
  • Top Secret clearance
  • AWS Certification

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
