How does a part-time neonatal pharmacist typically collaborate with the NICU team to ensure optimal medication safety and efficacy?

As a part-time neonatal pharmacist, you play a crucial role in multidisciplinary rounds and collaborate closely with neonatologists, nurses, and dietitians to review medication orders, monitor dosing adjustments, and address potential drug interactions. Your expertise is frequently called upon for patient-specific consultations, especially regarding weight-based dosing and unique neonatal pharmacokinetics. Communication and flexibility are key, as you may need to coordinate handovers and provide input during critical cases, even when not physically present. This collaborative environment fosters continuous learning and ensures high standards of medication safety for vulnerable neonatal patients.

To thrive as a Part Time Neonatal Pharmacist, you need a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, state licensure, and specialized knowledge in neonatal pharmacotherapy. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with healthcare teams are essential soft skills. These qualifications and skills are vital to ensure safe, effective medication management and optimal outcomes for vulnerable neonatal patients.

What are part time neonatal pharmacists?

Part time neonatal pharmacists are licensed pharmacists who specialize in the medication management of newborns, particularly those in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), and work on a part-time basis. They collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure the safe and effective use of medications for premature and critically ill infants. Their responsibilities include dosing calculations, monitoring for drug interactions, providing medication education to staff and families, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols, all while working fewer hours than full-time staff. This role requires specialized training in neonatal pharmacology and a strong attention to detail due to the unique needs of newborn patients.

Job description

Description
The University of Chicago's Department of Pediatrics, Section of Neonatology, seeks general pediatricians at 10% effort to join our multidisciplinary care team at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital NICU as Clinical Associates with renewable terms of up to two years. Appointees will provide neonatal services at one or more of our level II nurseries in the University of Chicago Medicine system. These positions do not require teaching or scholarly activity. Compensation is dependent on qualifications and does not include benefits.
Appointees will collaborate with a dynamic team of neonatologists to provide superior and compassionate care. Our hospitalists work as a team member on one of our clinical services, delivering care to a variety of sick newborns, alongside neonatal nurse practitioners, pediatric residents, nutritionists, and neonatal pharmacists, all of whom are providing care under the supervision of the attending neonatologist. Daily patient care encompasses pre-rounding on patients, presenting patients on rounds, writing orders, dealing with clinical problems as they arise, as well as speaking with parents and consultants. After skills evaluation and, if necessary, additional training and support, appointees will perform standard neonatal procedures as indicated, attend high risk deliveries, and perform neonatal resuscitations.
At our level II nurseries, appointees will attend deliveries and perform neonatal resuscitations and stabilize infants for transport. In consultation with the attending neonatologist, appointees will also manage infants whose level of acuity allows them to stay at their hospital of birth.
Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have an MD degree or equivalent; 2) have completed an ACGME-approved pediatric residency; 3) be board certified/eligible in general pediatrics; 4) have or be eligible for permanent State of Illinois medical licensure.
We especially welcome applicants with experience equivalent to one year of post-graduate work in a Level II NICU or one of higher acuity.
To be considered, those interested must apply through The University of Chicago, Academic Recruitment job board, which uses Interfolio to accept applications: http://apply.interfolio.com/153015. Applicants must upload a CV. Review of applications ends when the positions are filled.
