Job description

MSD seeks a part-time Music teacher to nurture a love of music and a lifelong appreciation for the arts in our students grades Kindergarten through 6th. Guided by Montessori principles, the music teacher will teach the grammar of music and guide the students to develop their abilities for listening, singing, playing instruments, and performing. The ideal candidate will introduce students to a diverse world of music, including a wide range of genres, artists, traditions, and cultures. Experience with composing and recording music is a plus. The music teacher will support the classrooms in preparing for performances and will oversee the use of the performing arts center and equipment. Experience teaching music to elementary-aged children is required, and experience in a Montessori setting is greatly preferred.

Key Responsibilities:Instructional Planning and Delivery: Create and deliver engaging, age-appropriate music lessons that align with Montessori principles.
  • Student Development: Continuously assess and monitor student progress through regular observations and evaluations (2-3 times per year), providing constructive feedback to students and parents.

  • Collaboration and Integration: Work closely with Lead Teachers to integrate music into the broader curriculum and foster a collaborative teaching environment.

  • Curriculum Enhancement: Remain current on educational trends and music teaching techniques by engaging in professional development opportunities, including workshops, staff development days, and independent research.

  • Event Coordination: Lead the planning and execution of school-wide musical events, such as annual recitals, performances, Presentation Night, and Graduation, including the coordination of all rehearsal schedules and logistics.

  • Classroom Communication: Create engaging content for monthly newsletters, highlighting student achievements and updates in music education.

  • Resource Management: Maintain and manage the school’s musical inventory, including sound and AV equipment. Act as the primary contact for equipment maintenance and support.

  • Optional - Music Recording: Record music with students annually, providing them with the opportunity to showcase their musical talents.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Prior experience teaching music and performing arts at the elementary school level, grades K - 6th is required.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Elementary Music Education, Performing Arts, or a related field. A background in Performing Arts is preferred but not required.

  • Montessori teaching credentials are strongly preferred, but not mandatory.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and fellow educators.

  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.

  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

Schedule:
  • This is a part-time, 10-month position (August through May) requiring approximately 20 hours per week. The schedule includes:

    • Classroom instruction across various age groups

    • Time allocated for planning, collaboration, and professional development inclusive of salary

    • Participation in required meetings and occasional after-school events, such as performances and recitals.
