Part-Time Medical Biller / Coding Specialist
Eye Care Practice | Champaign, IL
Looking for flexibility, independence, and meaningful work?
We're looking for an experienced Part-Time Medical Biller / Coding Specialist to help our busy eye care practice stay on track and continue delivering excellent patient care.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working behind the scenes, understands insurance billing, and takes pride in making sure claims are processed accurately and efficiently. Our providers need help getting caught up on billing and coding, as well as ongoing support for weekly billing needs.
This role offers flexibility with scheduling. You'll work approximately 25-30 hours per week and can create your own schedule during our normal business hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Verify patient insurance coverage for both vision and medical insurance plans before appointments.
  • Review patient charts and documentation to ensure accurate coding and claim submission.
  • Submit electronic and paper claims using CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding.
  • Process billing for routine eye exams, medical eye conditions, and related services.
  • Post insurance and patient payments accurately within the billing system.
  • Review Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and reconcile payments.
  • Investigate and resolve denied, delayed, or unpaid claims.
  • File claim appeals and communicate with insurance carriers as needed.
  • Contact patients regarding account balances, billing questions, and payment arrangements.
  • Generate patient statements and assist with collection efforts when necessary.
  • Work closely with providers and front office staff to ensure documentation supports proper coding and reimbursement.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and billing standards.
  • Stay current on insurance guidelines, reimbursement policies, and coding changes that impact optometry and ophthalmology billing.
  • Help establish consistent billing processes that keep accounts receivable under control and providers focused on patient care.

What We're Looking For
  • Previous medical billing and coding experience required.
  • Experience with optometry, ophthalmology, vision insurance, or healthcare billing strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding.
  • Experience submitting claims and resolving insurance payment issues.
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Comfortable learning and working within electronic medical records (EMR) and billing software.
  • High level of integrity and commitment to patient confidentiality.
