Job description

ANNOUNCEMENT
Southwestern Illinois College is accepting applications for the SWIC Educational Employee, part-time, union position of Library Services Assistant.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
In accordance with the Mission and Values of Southwestern Illinois College, this part-time position is scheduled to work up to 28 hours per week. It involves responsibility for assisting in the work of the library in an institution providing educational, reference, reader's advisory, and other suitable library services. It includes clerical, technical, and public service duties with both attention to detail and the ability to see the larger function of the library and the college. The position involves a basic knowledge of modern library organization and techniques in the performance of varied library duties and contact with students, faculty, college staff, and the public. Employees exercise discretion and judgment in making decisions regarding the performance of their duties and execute these decisions without direct supervision. Tasks, once learned, are performed under very general direction. The employee must be able to adapt and grow in a constantly changing electronic environment, multi-tasking and prioritizing effectively, and working positively in a team atmosphere. This position coordinates closely with cataloging, acquisitions, reference staff, vendors, and individuals at other college libraries and local and state library organizations as well as faculty and staff of the college to resolve a variety of issues. Work is reviewed by a system of internal checks, observation of results and general conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school diploma or GED certificate required. Additional training and/or education is preferred.
2. Experience with applicable computer software, hardware and the internet is required.
3. One year of clerical or library experience is preferred.
4. Knowledge of modern library operations including library automation, public access systems, circulation systems, internet-based applications, and library databases preferred.
5. Strong communication, organization, interpersonal and public service skills essential.
STARTING SALARY
$18.30 per hour, up to 28 hours per week.
