About Us:

Sonoma Specialty Hospital, as the county’s only Long-Term Acute Care Hospital, is dedicated to caring for patients that require an extended acute care stay due to severe illness or catastrophic injury. We accept patients from the ICU, Step-Down and Telemetry units of partner hospitals and continue their care for as long as 45 days. This care focuses on the challenges of getting patients off of ventilator support, healing severe wounds, aiding their recovery following surgical procedures, and providing rehabilitation to speed their return to daily life. Our Hospital provides ICU, Surgical, and Step-Down care with dialysis, multi-specialty therapies and ongoing planning for the patient’s transition back home or into a lower level of care. Job Summary:

Demonstrates competent patient assessment skills for various age groups. Responsible for direct and indirect cardiopulmonary care and patient services. Delivers routine and critical care services consistent with departmental policies and procedures which include but are not limited to, a full range of cardiorespiratory treatments. These are administration of pulmonary medications, treatments, diagnostic procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management, and education for patient, family and healthcare team members. Performs ECG’s, interdepartmental transports on ventilator assisted patients, ABG’s, assistance with Bronchoscopies and any other related Cardiopulmonary Care procedures and duties as assigned.


Job Duties:

  • Monitor and adjust ventilator settings for long-term patients.
  • Perform weaning trials and assist with liberation from mechanical ventilation.
  • Troubleshoot ventilator alarms and complications.
  • Administer oxygen therapy (high-flow, CPAP/BiPAP, traditional oxygen delivery).
  • Perform tracheostomy care, suctioning, and airway clearance techniques.
  • Conduct ABG (arterial blood gas) analysis, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and bedside spirometry.
  • Monitor pulse oximetry, capnography, and other respiratory parameters.
  • Develop and implement respiratory care plans in collaboration with physicians.
  • Educate patients and families on chronic respiratory conditions, inhaler techniques, and home care needs.
  • Respond to rapid responses and codes (e.g., Code Blue, respiratory distress).
  • Provide advanced airway management as needed.

Requirements:

Education, Training and Licenses Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school for Respiratory Care (BS/RRT preferred);
  • RCP with current California License;
  • BLS and ACLS are required.

Experience Required: One year experience preferred in routine and critical respiratory care, including mechanical ventilator in ICU, and delivery of protocol-directed therapeutic interventions, along with knowledge of ECGs and dysrhythmias.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required: Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work as a team member. Basic data and computer skills.

Equipment Knowledge Required: Knowledge of mechanical, digitally integrated, ventilators, Portable ventilator protocols, Chest physiotherapy, ECG machines, Pulse Oximetry, NPPV, ABG Diagnostics and sampling, Ability to learn function of additional machines used in patient care. Computer knowledge required.Working Conditions (Noise, Environmental, Demands, Shift, Setting, Human Interface, etc.): Able to work in fast paced moderately noisy setting. Able to function under crisis situations. Able to use good judgment and priority setting.

Safety Requirements: Employees are responsible for all aspects of the hospital safety and health program including compliance with safety rules and regulations, remedying unsafe working conditions, and for continuously practicing safety while performing duties. Sonoma Specialty Hospital policy prohibits employees with patient contact or those who prepare products for patient use from wearing artificial nails.
Physical Requirements:While performing the duties of this job, the position is frequently required to do the following:

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained period of time.
  • Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from a lower to higher position or horizontally from position to position or otherwise move objects.
  • Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • Express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly.
  • Perceive the nature of sound with no less than a 40 db loss @ 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction.
  • Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction.
  • While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.
