What is a part time hospice RN?

Part Time Hospice Registered Nurses (RNs) are licensed nurses who provide compassionate care to patients with terminal illnesses, typically working less than full-time hours. Their responsibilities include managing pain and symptoms, providing emotional support to patients and families, and coordinating care plans with other healthcare professionals. Part Time Hospice RNs may work in patients' homes, hospice facilities, or nursing homes, focusing on improving the quality of life for those in the final stages of illness. Their schedules offer flexibility, making this role suitable for nurses seeking work-life balance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time hospice RN?

To thrive as a Part Time Hospice RN, you need strong clinical nursing skills, experience in pain and symptom management, and an active RN license, often with additional hospice or palliative care certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and home health documentation tools is common in this role. Compassion, excellent communication, and emotional resilience are crucial soft skills for supporting patients and families through end-of-life care. These skills ensure high-quality, empathetic care and effective collaboration within interdisciplinary hospice teams.

What are some common challenges faced by part time hospice RNs, and how can they effectively manage them?

Part-time hospice RNs often face challenges such as managing a fluctuating patient load, coordinating care across multiple shifts, and maintaining strong communication with the interdisciplinary team despite limited hours. To address these challenges, it's important to stay organized, proactively update documentation, and utilize handoff tools to ensure continuity of care. Building strong relationships with colleagues and staying connected via regular team meetings or digital communication platforms can also help part-time RNs stay informed and provide high-quality, compassionate care.

Job description

Registered Nurse (RN) | 50% Hospice On-Call

Meadowlark Hospice is hiring a part-time Registered Nurse (RN) for a 50% on-call position.

As a Hospice RN, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families during one of lifeโ€™s most important transitions. Youโ€™ll provide compassionate, home-based care focused on comfort, dignity, quality of life, and supporting the whole family.

In your role as a Meadowlark Hospice RN you will:
  • Provide home-based hospice care to patients with a life expectancy of six months or less, with a focus on comfort and quality of life.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team that includes a physician, LPN, CNA, HHA, social worker, chaplain, and volunteers to carry out each patientโ€™s individualized plan of care.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, check vital signs, evaluate breathing, monitor pain and symptoms, and administer prescribed medications and treatments.
  • Ensure patients have timely access to necessary medical equipment, prescribed oxygen, medications, and other supplies.
  • Educate and support family members regarding the patientโ€™s prognosis, changes in the plan of care, medications, symptom management, and hospice goals.
  • Provide holistic care that supports the patientโ€™s mind, body, and spirit while engaging and supporting the entire family.
  • Respond to patient and family needs as part of the hospice on-call team, providing reassurance and clinical guidance when it matters most.
What we are looking for in a Hospice RN
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Kansas RN license that is active and in good standing.
  • At least 12 months of accumulated experience as a Registered Nurse within the last five years; or, if you have not practiced within the last five years, evidence of current clinical knowledge (within the last 12 months) as deemed appropriate by DHCS.
  • One year of hospice care experience preferred.
  • Compassionate, dependable, and comfortable providing care and support in patientsโ€™ homes.
  • Strong communication and assessment skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Why Hospice Nursing?

Hospice nursing is more than providing medical careโ€”itโ€™s about helping patients live as comfortably and fully as possible while supporting the people who love them. At Meadowlark Hospice, youโ€™ll be part of a team dedicated to compassionate, individualized care and making a difference when families need it most.

If youโ€™re an RN looking for meaningful work where your clinical skills and compassion truly matter, weโ€™d love to hear from you.
