Job Summary
The Greenhouse Manager supports the overall operation and maintenance of the Angelo State University greenhouse. This position helps ensure the greenhouse remains organized, well-maintained, and supportive of instructional, research, and departmental activities. The Greenhouse Manager also provides guidance to student assistants, interns, and volunteers working in the greenhouse.
Graduate students pursuing a degree in a related field are encouraged to apply.
Essential Duties
  1. Manage greenhouse operations, including monitoring and adjusting computerized environmental controls to support plant health and greenhouse functions.
  2. Develop and implement plant care programs, including watering, fertilization, soil and media preparation, sterilization procedures, and species-specific growing requirements.
  3. Monitor plant health and apply integrated pest management practices to prevent and address insect, disease, and weed issues.
  4. Maintain greenhouse policies, procedures, protocols, and documentation in accordance with best practices and departmental expectations.
  5. Oversee greenhouse facility needs, equipment, supplies, cleanliness, and organization. Coordinate maintenance and repairs with appropriate parties as needed.
  6. Lead, train, and provide direction to student workers and volunteers assigned to greenhouse activities.
  7. Communicate with faculty, students, visitors, and the Greenhouse Director regarding greenhouse operations, events, strategies, emergencies, and other relevant matters.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Greenhouse Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
  • Plant care, plant health, and basic plant science principles.
  • Nutrients, fertilization, watering practices, and growing requirements.
  • Greenhouse management principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Integrated pest management practices and greenhouse sanitation procedures.

Skills:
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or similar software.
  • Verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Abilities:
  • Calculate and determine weights, measurements, and quantities of materials and substances.
  • Complete work accurately, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Follow established greenhouse procedures and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, students, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in horticulture, greenhouse operations, plant care, or a related field.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings or weekends, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Plant Science, Greenhouse Management, Horticulture, or a closely related field.
  • Graduate-level coursework or enrollment in a related discipline.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs, and carrying and lifting (up to 50 lbs)
  • Reaching, kneeling, crouching
  • Visual and hearing acuity
  • Basic manual dexterity with both hands
  • Working in hot and humid conditions
