Position Information Expand your career with the County of Sonoma as an extra-help Geographic Information Technician I with Sonoma Public Infrastructure. Starting salary up to $50.33/hour. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related software/hardware, Geographic Information Technicians (GIS Techs) prepare, revise, maintain, and manipulate a variety of maps and spatial database records, documents, and reports

When requested by County departments, they explain and interpret maps; provide technical customer service support; and troubleshoot software/software-related questions. Additionally, they consult with staff to execute map designs that best serve business needs. This position reports to the Department Information Systems Manager and does not have any supervisory or lead responsibilities.

The department's Geographic Information Technician II will act as the lead worker, assigning work and delegating tasks to this position. The individual in this assignment will occasionally work outdoors part-time in all weather conditions for field data collection. This position will not be eligible for a hybrid work schedule as their work will be conducted in the office or in the field.

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience maintaining GIS data layers and metadata using ESRI ArcGIS software, and will have many of the following: GIS experience related to road systems, land use, zoning, flood plains, watershed areas, demographic analysis, special districts, or open space, etc. Proven experience effectively designing cartographic products, developing workflows/data automation tasks, and assisting users in visualizing business data in map form Experience providing GIS technical support to end-users, including troubleshooting software, and answering software-related questions Proven customer service skills, with the aptitude and patience for collaborating with a wide variety of colleagues, virtually and in-person Strong written and spoken communication skills with the ability to interact with a diverse group of coworkers with varying GIS knowledge Intermediate skills using ESRI ArcGIS: Pro, Online (AGO), Portal, Indoors, enterprise geodatabases, and/or MS SQL database software *Salary is negotiable within the established range. Extra-Help Employment Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff.

Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as long-term disability insurance coverage, accrual of vacation, participation in the County retirement program, or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year.

These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage. Sonoma Public Infrastructure is recruiting to fill a temporary, extra-help Geographic Information Technician I position.

This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Minimum Qualifications Experience: Any combination of training and work experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and abilities.

Normally, one year of work experience using geographic information systems software would provide this opportunity. Experience using graphics software may be required for some positions. Education: Any combination of educational coursework and training which demonstrates possession of knowledge and abilities related to principles of GIS, cartography, and database technology as it relates to spatial analysis.

Normally, course work in geography, geographic information systems and related areas would provide this opportunity. An Associate of Arts degree in a relevant area is highly desirable License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Geographic Information Systems (GIS); GIS software, such as Arc/Info and ArcView; principles and practices of digitizing, data conversion, data management and cartography; geometry and trigonometry; relational database technology; currently used spreadsheet, word processing, scanning, presentation, database and computer assisted drafting software. Ability to: learn to effectively prepare maps using the commonly accepted practices of cartography; understand and use Geographic Information System (GIS) software; learn to develop GIS applications and interfaces between various systems; update and manage computer file systems; understand and conceptualize spatial data; install and perform software upgrades; maintain county map-related records; follow oral and written directions; perform basic mathematics and geometric calculations of plane and solid figures; establish and maintain effective relationships with county employees, contractors and the general public.
