Job description

Position Overview

The Ellis School, the only pre-kindergarten to grade 12 independent all-girls day school in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking a part-time Middle School French teacher beginning in August 2026. Responsibilities will include teaching Middle School French courses. Other duties, includingโ€”but not limited toโ€”advising, proctoring study halls, chaperoning, and committee work, are integral to the role of Middle School faculty members. Under the supervision of the Chair of the World Language Department, this position directly advances the Ellis mission by fostering global awareness, cultural competence, and confident communication skills in girls during their formative middle and upper school years, while contributing meaningfully to the collaborative and student-centered community that defines an Ellis education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach Middle School French courses

  • Design and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate lesson plans

  • Assess student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback

  • Proctor study halls and support student supervision

  • Chaperone school events, trips, and activities as needed

  • Participate actively in department and school-wide committees

  • Collaborate with colleagues within the World Language Department and across divisions

  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive school community rooted in Ellisโ€™s mission and values, demonstrating integrity, flexibility, and a collaborative, student-centered approach

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in French, or a related field

  • Demonstrated fluency in French

  • Commitment to innovative pedagogical practices and the effective integration of technology in instruction

  • Strong sense of community and collaborative teamwork

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in French, or a related field

  • 3โ€“5 years of experience teaching Middle and/or Upper School students

  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to all-girls education

  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for working with adolescents
