Position Summary
The 1:1 School Nurse provides direct nursing care and health support to a preschool student with complex medical needs during the school day. The nurse ensures the student's safety, access to education, and participation in school activities by implementing physician orders, nursing care plans, and emergency procedures related to tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube (G-tube) care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Health & Medical Care
  • Provide continuous 1:1 nursing care to a preschool student throughout the school day
  • Perform tracheostomy care, including suctioning, monitoring airway patency, and responding to respiratory distress
  • Administer G-tube feedings, medications, and site care per physician orders
  • Monitor vital signs and observe for changes in medical status
  • Implement the student's individualized healthcare plan (IHP) and emergency action plans
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies, including initiating emergency protocols when necessary

Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with school staff, related service providers, and administrators to support student safety and access to instruction
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding the student's health status during the school day, as directed by district policy
  • Coordinate with the school nurse supervisor, physicians, and medical providers as needed

Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of nursing care, medications, and medical interventions
  • Ensure compliance with district policies, state nursing regulations, and confidentiality requirements (FERPA/HIPAA as applicable)
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary nursing environment and properly store medical supplies and equipment

Safety & Training
  • Ensure emergency equipment is readily available and functional
  • Assist in training relevant school staff on emergency procedures related to the student's medical needs, as appropriate
  • Support student inclusion in school activities while maintaining health and safety

Qualifications
Required
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the state of employment
  • Experience with pediatric nursing and complex medical care
  • Demonstrated competency in tracheostomy and G-tube care
  • CPR and First Aid certification (Pediatric Advanced Life Support preferred, if applicable

Preferred
  • School nursing experience
  • Experience working with preschool-aged children
  • Knowledge of special education services and IEP processes

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and position a preschool-aged child as needed
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
  • Ability to stand, sit, and move throughout the school environment

Work Schedule
  • School-day schedule aligned with the district calendar
  • Position is student-specific and contingent upon student enrollment and medical needs
