Job description


The Role
Are you a problem solver? A tech-savvy tinkerer? Are you enthusiastic about science and technology?
Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented part-time Exhibit Technician with a specialization in mechanical systems, electronics, and software to support the daily operations, maintenance, and repair of our exhibitions.

The Exhibit Technician should be available to work a minimum of three days per week. This role reports to the Senior Manager of Exhibit Services.

What You’ll Do

LSC’s part-time Exhibit Technician will perform some combination of the following tasks and responsibilities; however, this is not an exhaustive list so other things may arise as special exhibit needs arise.


Exhibit Maintenance:

  • Responsible for daily operations of all Liberty Science Center exhibits, including daily start-up and shut-down procedures for all exhibits, and ensuring all exhibits are operationally functional when the building is open, including during evening and private events

  • Respond promptly to radio calls that identify exhibit issues on the Floor

  • Troubleshoot technical problems related to audiovisual, lighting, and interactive systems down to the component level, diagnosing and resolving issues efficiently

  • Operate oscilloscopes, generators, meters, hand & power tools, as well as service and test computers

  • Test, repair, or replace audio, video, network, and specialty wiring between components. Solder to make repairs and fix device components

  • Conduct preventive maintenance activities to ensure the exhibits are in optimal working condition, including testing, cleaning, and replacing components

  • Create and maintain accurate record keeping and documentation of exhibit maintenance logs, repair history, and inventory management

  • Provide up-to-date information to supervisors, co-workers, and other internal personnel


  • Technology Support and Integration:

    • Support the installation, fabrication, evaluation, and dismantling of exhibits, ensuring proper integration of audiovisual, lighting, and interactive technology components

    • Utilize mechanical drawings, schematics, and product manuals to repair and maintain exhibit technology systems

    • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends related to exhibit technology, recommending innovative solutions for enhancing visitor experiences


  • Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to safety protocols and risk management procedures while working in public areas and workspaces, ensuring a safe environment for visitors and staff

    • Maintain a clean, organized, and clutter-free work environment, following proper storage and disposal procedures for hazardous materials


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills in troubleshooting complex technical, audiovisual, lighting, and interactive technology systems

  • Solid understanding of electrical and mechanical principles, including wiring, connections, and basic circuitry

  • Knowledgeable in the use of basic carpentry techniques, hand tools, power tools, paints and adhesives, and associated safety practices

  • Familiarity with control systems, microcontrollers, automation systems, programming languages (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino) and operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Google Chrome) is highly desirable

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret design schematics, shop/fabrication drawings, and standard business documents

  • Ability to communicate effectively through writing, telephone or in-person

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, capable of managing multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating a high level of professionalism, integrity, and dedication to delivering quality work


Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience providing mechanical and technical maintenance and fabrication support

  • Associates degree, vocational school certification, or other postsecondary education in a relevant technical field, such as engineering, computing, design and fabrication, is considered an asset

  • Prior experience working in a museum, gallery, or similar high traffic environment is a plus


Classification & Work Location

This is a part-time, non-exempt position, which means this role is eligible for the overtime provision for any hours that extend beyond the standard 40-hour work week at LSC. The ideal candidate must be available to work a minimum of 3 days per week including: weekends, evenings, and holidays as business needs or special events require.


This is an on-site position at Liberty Science Center located in Jersey City, NJ, and is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.


Physical Demands

The Exhibit Technician is required to be on their feet a majority of the day and use their hands to manipulate tools and materials. The Tech will need to perform diagnostics via visual and audio cues and should be comfortable working at various heights, including working on ladders and lifts. Furthermore, the Exhibit Technician should be comfortable maneuvering through large crowds as well as have a tolerance for working in chaotic or loud environments. The ability to lift 40 lbs. will be necessary.


Training will be provided to the Exhibit Technician for the safe operation of the following lifts; scissor, toucan and fork lift.

Compensation

The Exhibit Technician is compensated at a rate of $23.50/hr. Liberty Science Center provides generous perks for all eligible part-time employees, including:
