Position: Security Guardย

The Police Athletic League (PAL) of New York City is an independent youth development nonprofit organization and has been a vibrant and vital institution, serving as an effective, critical bridge between police and communities across all five boroughs of the City since 1914. PALย operatesย diverse programs for children as young as 2 years old to young adults. Programs include Head Start, after-school programs and summer day camps for elementary,ย middleย and high school youth, and summer Playstreets. PAL also runs evening teen centers and college readiness programs, youth employment, and juvenile justice programs. Staying true to PAL's roots, a cornerstone of our youth development strategy includes offering competitive and recreational sports for children of all ages. At PAL,ย we'reย devoted to empowering communities and building the best places to work, and that goes for our own teams too.ย 

Position Summary:ย 

Weย areย looking for a Part Time Security Guard to helpย us create unique spaces where kids belong and feel safe. The Security Guardย is responsible forย maintainingย the safety of participants, staff, and property during after-school program hours. In consultation with theย center'sย Director, the Security Guard willย implementย andย promoteย security procedures.ย 

The Security Guard will report to the Elementary School Director or the Middle School Director.ย 

Whatย you'llย do:ย 

Major Duties & Responsibilitiesย 

  1. Monitorย common areasย for safety. Walk the hallways, gym, stairwells, and outdoor space routinely to ensure safety and prevent conflicts or unsafe behavior.ย 

  1. Monitor entry and exit points, and security cameras where available, to help ensure that only authorized individuals access the building.ย 

  1. De-escalate conflicts with calm verbal requests Elevate unresolved issues toย supervisors.ย 

  1. Respond appropriately andย in accordance withย PAL policies when time-sensitive mental health services are needed such asย in theย incidence ofย suicide prevention, grief, and loss due to death or incarceration of a family member.ย 

  1. Maintain clear documentation when incidents occur. Write short, factual descriptions of events.ย 

  1. Participate in emergency procedures, including fire drills, evacuations, lockdowns, and shelter-in-place, as directed by the Center Director.ย 

  1. Learn about the members of the community and be a part of the community. PAL Centers are youth development hubs. Positive relationships are the cornerstone ofย all ofย our work.ย 

  1. Interact with caretakersย when onsiteย and keep open lines ofย communication.ย 

  1. Attendย and activelyย participateย in all required training sessions, designated meetings, andย special events.ย 

The Commitmentย 

  1. Able to work 15 hours a week (3 hours a day, 5 days a week).ย 

  1. Able to attend 15 hours of orientation prior to the beginning of programming.ย 

  1. Able to attend scheduled staff meetings and professional development throughout the year.ย 

What You Bring:ย 

  1. Minimum High School Diploma / GED.ย 

  1. New York State Security Guard License (required).ย 

  1. S-95 FDNY Certificate of Fitness and F-02 Fire Guard for Shelters certificate. If not already held, both must be obtained withinย 90 daysย of employment.ย 

  1. Excellent verbal communication skills.ย 

  1. A firm and friendly tone. The ability to be welcoming andย maintainย security.ย 

  1. Strong situational awareness, the ability toย identifyย early signs of unsafe behavior.ย 

  1. Skilled in verbal de-escalation, redirection, and conflict resolution.ย 

  1. Able to build positive rapport with diverse youth, families, and community members.ย 

  1. Bilingual in Spanish, French, or Chinese preferred.ย 

Compensation:ย 

The salary for this role is $17.00 to $20.00 an hour.ย
