Essential Job Duties
We are seeking a highly skilled Electrical Maintenance Technician to join our Central Utility Plants operations team. This position will perform a variety of specialized tasks to support the operations of our Central Utility Plants. These tasks involve testing, renovating, overhauling, replacing, and performing preventive maintenance on standard electrical systems, including electrical distribution panels, motors, soft starters, variable frequency drives, UPS, and emergency lighting systems across our five utility plants located on the Main campus, Centennial Campus, and Centennial Biomedical Campus. If you are a highly skilled facilities professional who takes pride in maintaining complex building systems and enjoys working in a collaborative, team-focused environment, we encourage you to apply. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues on plant equipment such as chillers, boilers, combustion turbines, fuel gas compressors, and auxiliary equipment
  • Collaborate with inspectors, contractors, and department liaisons as required
  • Repair and maintain electrical equipment, distribution systems, minor controls, and signal equipment
  • Inspect work sites, assessing material and tool requirements, and determining repair methods
  • Plan and execute conduit runs, wire pulls, and equipment assembly
  • Perform tasks such as replacing light bulbs, fixtures, ballasts, switches, motors, soft starts, etc.; removing and replacing defective wiring and circuit breakers; and balancing loads in electrical panels
  • Install new electrical systems to support minor modifications
  • Maintain motors, electrical distribution systems, and auxiliary equipment
  • Provide comprehensive and accurate information on planned/preventive maintenance items via the Facility Operations maintenance tracking system
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, and follow verbal and written instructions related to work assignments and operational needs.
  • Perform lifting duties up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations

Other Responsibilities
  • This position has been designated as Essential Personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a large institutional or commercial facilities environment.
  • Working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), DDC controls, or other building operating systems.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining complex mechanical systems such as boilers, chillers, geothermal systems, or central plant equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in training or mentoring team members and supporting the implementation of new technologies or systems.

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver's license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
