Job description

Ocular Tissue Recovery Technician - Part-Time, Nights

Part-Time, On-Call | 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM| Saturday-Sunday Nights | $23/hr, increasing to $25/ hr after training + case premiums


Position Purpose:

The Recovery Technician is responsible for ocular tissue procurement procedures throughout the service region. This position ensures compliance with regulatory standards and internal procedures while maintaining a high level of accuracy and professionalism in a time-sensitive healthcare environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct surgical procurement (recovery) of ocular tissues from authorized donors.
  • Perform donor medical history reviews and physical assessments, collect blood samples, and accurately document donor information in the eye bank database system.
  • Prepare and transport ocular tissues and biological specimens, including transport to and from other locations as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), HIPAA, and all federal and state regulations, including completion of annual competency reviews.
  • After attaining proficiency, assist in hands-on training in ocular tissue procurements.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with team members, leadership, and external partners
  • Assist with facility cleaning, equipment maintenance and other operational tasks or projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, and phone communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction and collaboratively within a team.
  • Demonstrates excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while managing multiple tasks and frequent interruptions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, general database systems, and web-based applications.

Basic Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, and an acceptable driving record as determined by the organization
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Required to have a yearly influenza vaccination

Preferred Requirements:

  • Medical or biological science background preferred, including familiarity with medical terminology.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and safely operate a vehicle for extended periods in various conditions, including long-distances, nighttime, and inclement weather.
  • Frequent periods of intense concentration, attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring prolonged use of printed materials and computer screens.
  • Ability to perform delicate manual procedures with a high degree of dexterity.
  • Long periods of sitting and/or standing required
  • May require occasional use of stairs to access work areas or facilities. Ability to lift, move, and position a donor with care, while following safety techniques learned in training.

Working Environment:

  • Work is performed in multiple environments, including normal office settings, hospitals (ICU, inpatient units, operating rooms, morgue), funeral homes or mortuaries, and medical examiner facilities.
  • Requires travel throughout the service region, including driving to other locations.
  • Must maintain flexibility for 24-hour operations, including on-call coverage during day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts, with occasional work beyond scheduled hours.
  • The schedule is based on the business needs of the location and may include:
    • A minimum of two on-call 12-hour shifts, with an additional rotating on-call 12-hour shift every third week.
