What is a part time corporate counsel?

Part time corporate counsel are licensed attorneys who provide legal advice and services to businesses on a part-time basis, rather than as full-time, in-house employees. They help companies with issues like compliance, contracts, employment law, intellectual property, and risk management. This role is ideal for organizations that need legal expertise but do not require or cannot afford a full-time staff attorney. Part time corporate counsel may work for multiple clients or split their time between several organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time corporate counsel, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Corporate Counsel, you typically need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar membership, and significant experience in corporate law. Familiarity with contract management systems, legal research databases, and compliance tools is often required. Excellent judgment, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly are valuable soft skills. These qualifications ensure effective legal guidance and risk management for the organization, even within a flexible or reduced-hour schedule.

How does a part time corporate counsel typically collaborate with internal departments, given the limited hours?

As a part-time corporate counsel, you'll often rely on efficient communication and prioritization to collaborate effectively with internal teams such as HR, finance, and compliance. Most part-time counsels establish clear schedules for meetings and updates, utilizing digital tools for document review and feedback. Proactive relationship-building and setting expectations for response times help ensure legal support aligns with business needs, despite working fewer hours. This role often requires strong organizational skills to manage multiple stakeholders and rapidly changing priorities.

What is the difference between Part Time Corporate Counsel vs Contract Corporate Counsel?
