What does a part time Chief People Officer do?

A Part Time Chief People Officer (CPO) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing an organization’s people strategy, culture, and human resources functions, but on a part-time or fractional basis. They guide HR policies, talent management, employee engagement, and leadership development. By working part time, they provide strategic direction and expertise without the commitment or cost of a full-time executive, which is especially valuable for startups and growing companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time Chief People Officer?

To thrive as a Part Time Chief People Officer, you need extensive experience in HR leadership, strategic workforce planning, and a solid understanding of employment law, often supported by a relevant degree and senior HR certifications such as SHRM-SCP or SPHR. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), talent management platforms, and data analytics tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, change management, and stakeholder engagement skills are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies enable the CPO to drive organizational culture, ensure compliance, and strategically align people initiatives with business objectives.

How does a part time Chief People Officer typically balance strategic leadership with limited working hours?

A part-time Chief People Officer (CPO) focuses on high-impact strategic initiatives, such as talent management, culture development, and organizational planning, rather than daily HR operations. They often collaborate closely with executive teams and HR managers to set priorities and delegate execution. Effective time management and clear communication are essential, as the CPO must align stakeholders and implement long-term people strategies within a condensed schedule. This role is ideal for experienced HR leaders who can quickly assess organizational needs, provide guidance, and drive change without being involved in every detail.

Job description

FRACTIONAL CFO | Strategic Financial Leadership | $130,000–$190,000 Annualized DOE

About the Company & Opportunity
Our client is seeking a Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide hands-on financial leadership, strategic insight, and operational guidance on a part-time or project basis. This role is ideal for a senior finance executive who thrives in dynamic environments—helping small to mid-sized organizations strengthen their accounting infrastructure, streamline reporting, and prepare for sustainable growth.

The Fractional CFO will partner closely with ownership and senior leadership to deliver executive-level financial oversight without the full-time cost commitment, offering high-value expertise across forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out
• High-impact, flexible leadership role with schedule flexibility (10–20 hours per week).
• Partner directly with executive leadership to implement strategic initiatives.
• Opportunity to modernize financial systems and mentor accounting teams.
• Competitive compensation and ability to work remotely or hybrid, depending on client needs.

Key Responsibilities
• Oversee and guide accounting and finance operations, including month-end close, forecasting, and cash flow management.
• Lead the preparation and analysis of financial statements to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
• Provide strategic insight to executive leadership—budgeting, forecasting, KPI reporting, and margin improvement.
• Evaluate and enhance internal controls, policies, and financial systems.
• Collaborate with external auditors, lenders, and investors as needed.
• Support mergers, acquisitions, or strategic initiatives with modeling and due diligence analysis.
• Mentor accounting staff and help strengthen department efficiency and reporting accuracy.

Core Competencies & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including prior CFO or Controller-level experience.
• Strong background in GAAP compliance, cash flow management, and strategic planning.
• Proficient in ERP/accounting systems (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar).
• Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to operate in both tactical and advisory capacities.

Compensation: Annualized salary equivalent of $100,000–$170,000, depending on scope, structure, and client needs
Location: St. Joseph County
Engagement Type: Fractional / Contract
