Job description

Summary

The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students (grades K-12) to school on designated routes. This is a part-time, non-exempt position utilizing an early morning schedule during the academic school year.

Essential Functions

The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Safe Transportation: Safely operate a school bus over prescribed routes according to a strict time schedule, picking up and dropping off students at designated stops.
  • Vehicle Inspections: Conduct required daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections (checking brakes, lights, tires, and emergency exits) and promptly report any mechanical deficiencies.
  • Post-Trip Sweeps: Physically check the bus after every route to ensure no child or personal belonging is left behind on board.
  • Student Management: Maintain order, safety, and discipline among student passengers in accordance with the school's behavioral policies.
  • Logistics & Admin: Maintain accurate documentation, including daily mileage logs, student rider counts, and incident reports.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the interior of the assigned bus clean, sanitized, and presentable

Qualifications

  • Age Limit: Must be at least 25 years of age (per Tennessee state law for operating a school bus).
  • Licensing: Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with active Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
  • Medical Clearance: Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination and maintain a valid medical examiner's certificate.
  • Screenings: Must pass a comprehensive criminal background check, fingerprinting, a 5-year motor vehicle record (MVR) review, and ongoing random federal drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Experience: Prior commercial driving experience or experience working with children is preferred but not always required

Physical Requirements

  • Regular prolonged sitting while driving, alongside the physical agility to climb bus stairs and move quickly during emergency evacuations
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
  • Exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions, road hazards, and heavy traffic
