Essential Job Duties
The Anesthesia Department provides advanced anesthetic support to a varied patient population across the hospital campus, including small, large, and exotic species. While this role primarily operates within the Nephrology/Urology and Internal Medicine clinical areas, the successful candidate must be adaptable and willing to float to other service areas throughout the hospital complex as needed.
This position requires advanced veterinary medical knowledge-specifically including previous experience in a canine and feline veterinary setting-strong time-management skills, and the ability to thrive and practice good judgment independently in a fast-paced, teaching-focused clinical environment. The position collaborates closely with specialty services, clinicians, staff, and students to coordinate and deliver high-quality anesthetic and perioperative care.
Responsibilities include comprehensive patient assessment, administration of complex anesthetic and medical treatments, continuous monitoring during diagnostic and surgical procedures, post-operative recovery, and strict adherence to infectious disease and safety protocols. This role also supports hospital operations through electronic documentation, workflow coordination, and a strong desire to actively train, mentor, and teach learners, including fourth-year veterinary students.
Key Responsibilities:
Advanced Patient Care & Anesthesia Support
  • Provide comprehensive anesthetic and peri-anesthetic care, including pre-anesthetic assessments, high-risk drug calculations, advanced monitoring, life-saving interventions, pain management, and post-operative recovery for small, large, and exotic species.
  • Deliver independent, high-quality care for all patients, utilizing sound clinical judgment and requesting assistance from senior medical staff when appropriate.

Monitoring, Equipment & Technical Proficiency
  • Operate, interpret, and maintain advanced anesthetic and physiologic monitoring equipment and specialized patient care devices to ensure patient safety during surgical, diagnostic, and imaging procedures.
  • Demonstrate strong technical proficiency and the ability to work effectively with computers, electronic medical records, and clinical electronics.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Customer Service
  • Coordinate care and communicate professionally and effectively at all times with specialty services, clinicians, staff, and students across multiple hospital service areas to support complex medical and surgical cases.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and maintain strict professionalism and emotional regulation in charged, high-stress, or challenging clinical situations.
  • Work effectively as a collaborative member of the veterinary team, serving as an active participant in collective problem-solving and the continuous advancement of the department.

Education, Training & Mentorship
  • Orient, teach, and coach new staff, students, interns, and residents on anesthetic procedures, hospital policies, and patient care standards in a teaching-hospital environment.
  • Demonstrate a dedicated desire to teach, guide, and evaluate fourth-year veterinary students during their clinical rotations.

Documentation, Safety & Operational Compliance
  • Accurately document patient care, vitals, and treatments within hospital information systems.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, strictly adhering to infectious disease protocols, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety standards.
  • Safely work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, waste anesthetic gases, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

Physical & Schedule Requirements
  • Ability to frequently lift and position patients or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work beyond regularly scheduled hours when patient care needs or emergency cases dictate.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing anesthesia and perioperative patient care in a specialty, emergency, referral, or teaching veterinary hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in anesthetic monitoring, advanced drug calculations, pain management, and recovery of small animal patients; experience with large animal and/or exotic species is preferred.
  • Experience operating and interpreting advanced anesthetic and physiologic monitoring equipment and documenting patient care within electronic medical record systems.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or instructing veterinary students, veterinary technicians, interns, residents, or new staff in a clinical environment.
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize multiple patient care responsibilities, adapt to changing caseloads, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced clinical setting.
