What does a part time afternoon nanny do?

A Part Time Afternoon Nanny is responsible for caring for children during the afternoon hours, often after school, until parents return home. Their duties typically include preparing snacks, helping with homework, organizing activities, and sometimes transporting children to and from extracurricular activities. They may also assist with light household tasks related to the children, such as tidying play areas or doing laundry. The nanny works part-time hours, usually several afternoons per week, providing a safe and nurturing environment while parents are away.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time afternoon nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Afternoon Nanny, you generally need experience in childcare, a basic understanding of child development, and often CPR/first aid certification. Familiarity with communication apps for parents (like Brightwheel or Daily Connect) and knowledge of safe transportation practices are commonly required. Patience, reliability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust with both children and families. These skills are vital to ensure children's safety, foster positive relationships, and provide responsive, responsible care during critical after-school hours.

What are the most common challenges faced by a part time afternoon nanny, and how can they be managed effectively?

One of the most common challenges for part time afternoon nannies is balancing the varied after-school needs of children, such as homework support, meal preparation, and extracurricular activities, within a limited timeframe. Effective communication with parents about daily expectations and routines is key to managing these responsibilities smoothly. Additionally, being adaptable and proactive in planning activities helps ensure a positive, structured environment for the children. Building rapport with both the children and their parents also contributes to a successful and enjoyable work experience.

Responsibilities and Duties

WHO/WHAT: Afternoons in this household are anything but boring. This newly relocated McCandless family is searching for a reliable, calm, and creative nanny to become their partner in after-school care. Their bright, inquisitive daughter attends school daily from 9–3:30, and she thrives when afternoons are filled with movement, play, and gentle guidance. You’ll cover the core hours of 3–6 pm, with flexibility to add an hour before school pick-up (2–3 pm) for light household tasks, or an hour after for dinner prep or extended care (until 7 pm). This is a role that grows with the family: more hours are available during major school breaks (summer/winter/spring), other student off days, and occasional weekends or date nights are always welcome. Your afternoons together will include curiosity-fueled fun. This includes pick-up, snacks, outings to the park, climbing and running games, or the occasional ice cream stop. At home, you’ll help her transition smoothly from school into playtime or quiet time, ensuring her afternoons are structured yet fun. Parents appreciate a nanny who can gently redirect, encourage communication, and follow their child’s lead while still keeping a routine. Household support includes children’s and parents’ laundry, vacuuming/sweeping, light dinner prep, and pet care (feeding and litter box maintenance for two cats).

THE IDEAL NANNY IS…BALANCED! You’re the kind of caregiver who can balance patient calm with creative energy. Kids feel safe with you because you’re consistent, kind, and trustworthy—yet they’re also drawn to your playful side that says, “Yes, let’s climb that slide one more time.” You know that transitions can be tricky, so you lean on routines, choices, and gentle redirection. You’re organized enough to keep a household humming, reliable enough to always show up when you say you will, and personable enough that both parents and kids truly enjoy your presence. You are a safe and reliable driver (you are welcome to use the family’s vehicle!), love being outdoors, and you don’t shy away from pitching in with the small but important tasks that make family life easier. This family is multicultural (Mom from Taipei, Dad with roots in the U.S. and a stint in Australia), welcoming, and eager to find a nanny who feels like part of the team. If you’re ready to spend your afternoons outdoors, laughing, learning, and lightening the load for a busy family, this is your role—apply today!
