Position Summary

The Accountant position supports the financial health, accuracy, and compliance of Ujamaa Place by performing core accounting functions, maintaining financial records, and assisting with grant reporting and program‑specific financial tracking. This role works closely with the Senior Accountant, Advancement team, and program leadership to ensure timely, accurate, and transparent financial management aligned with nonprofit best practices.
General Accounting & Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate financial records, including general ledger entries, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable in accordance with internal controls.
  • Prepare and code invoices, receipts, deposits, and expense reimbursements.
  • Assist with monthly closing procedures and preparation of financial statements.
  • Support cash flow tracking and bank reconciliation activities.
  • Maintain organized digital and physical financial files.
Grant & Program Financial Support

  • Track grant expenditures and assist with preparation of grant financial reports.
  • Monitor program budgets (e.g., Lawn Care, Janitorial, Wellness, Housing) to ensure proper allocation and separation of funds.
  • Collaborate with program supervisors to verify participant payroll, equipment expenses, and revenue tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with restricted funding requirements and nonprofit accounting standards.
Payroll & Timekeeping Support

  • Review and verify staff and participant timecards for accuracy.
  • Assist with payroll processing and documentation as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of payroll and personnel data.
Financial Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Follow GAAP and nonprofit accounting best practices.
  • Support audit preparation, including gathering documentation and responding to auditor requests.
  • Maintain compliance with organizational financial policies and procedures.
  • Assist with implementing improvements to financial systems and internal controls.
Qualifications

Required

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in accounting or bookkeeping.
  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar).
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
Preferred

  • Experience in nonprofit accounting.
  • Familiarity with grant reporting and restricted funds.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse or justice‑involved populations.
