What is a Part 135 cargo pilot?

A Part 135 Cargo Pilot flies cargo under FAA Part 135 regulations, which govern on-demand and commuter operations. These pilots typically operate smaller aircraft for regional cargo transport, often flying time-sensitive freight for logistics companies. The job involves night flying, varying schedules, and operations in diverse weather conditions. Pilots must hold a commercial pilot’s license, meet minimum flight hours, and adhere to strict safety regulations. This role is a common stepping stone for pilots seeking experience before transitioning to larger commercial airlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part 135 cargo pilot?

To thrive as a Part 135 Cargo Pilot, you need strong aviation knowledge, hands-on flying skills, and an FAA commercial pilot certificate with instrument and multi-engine ratings. Familiarity with advanced avionics, GPS navigation systems, and compliance with FAA Part 135 regulations is essential. Excellent situational awareness, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure safe, efficient cargo operations in diverse weather and operational conditions, while meeting strict regulatory standards.

What are the typical work hours and schedules like for a Part 135 cargo pilot?

Part 135 Cargo Pilots often work on varying schedules that can include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and overnight shifts, depending on the cargo operator’s needs and routes served. The work frequently involves point-to-point flights with tight turnaround times, sometimes operating in challenging weather conditions or remote locations. Pilots may be assigned to regular routes or be on call for unscheduled charter operations. Flexibility and adaptability are important, as the nature of air cargo transport can lead to unpredictable schedules, but the dynamic work environment can also present opportunities for increased flight hours and experience accumulation.
