Click here for more information\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPOSITION HIGHLIGHTS\r\n\r\n\r\n This position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, 40 hours per week, and scheduled Monday - Friday.\r\n This position will be based in55 West Main Street in Waterbury, CT.\r\n Parole Officers in this class may be required to travel statewide based upon agency need.\r\n This position is also classified as a Hazardous Duty position.\r\n\r\nABOUT US\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Board of Pardons and Paroles is an autonomous State agency with administrative support provided by the Department of Correction. The Board possesses discretionary authority to grant pardons for criminal convictions and to grant parole to eligible and appropriate offenders in the community under supervision as a means of supporting their successful reintegration into law-abiding society.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe BOPP has four units, the Hearings Division, Pardons Unit, Interstate Unit and the Revocation Unit. Employees will be assigned to a Unit. For each, duties include:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Hearings Division: Parole Officers assigned to this unit will conduct interviews at correctional facilities throughout the state, perform risk assessments and present cases to panel members at all parole hearings.\r\n Pardons Unit: Parole Officers assigned to this unit conduct investigations and present cases to panel members for all pardon cases.\r\n Interstate Unit: Parole Officers assigned to this unit administratively oversee all incoming and outgoing cases in accordance with the Interstate Compact for Adult Offender Supervision.\r\n Revocation Unit: Parole Officers assigned to this unit conduct all revocation & preliminary hearings during the parole violation process.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Correction, Parole and Community Services and the Board of Pardons and Paroles this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in case management, inmate classification systems, counseling, investigation and enforcement activities for an assigned group of offenders.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

PAROLE AND COMMUNITY SERVICES:\r\n\r\n\r\n Performs tasks associated with community supervision, guidance and control of an assigned caseload of offenders;\r\n Conducts preliminary investigations and assists in coordinating and authorizing release of offenders;\r\n Reviews offender case files; conducts needs assessment and develops a plan for supervision;\r\n Coordinates development of a rehabilitation program for offenders;\r\n Makes appropriate referrals to community based programs for necessary treatment and evaluation and monitors offender progress while in treatment;\r\n Monitors offender progress through contacts with work supervisors, family members, law enforcement agencies, community based programs and educational institutions and recommends changes in program;\r\n Investigates violations of parole agreements or other performance difficulties;\r\n Processes violations;\r\n Performs difficult or hazardous investigations, makes arrests and transports offenders to correctional facilities;\r\n Utilizes computerized records system to maintain offenders complex case notes and comprehensive offender file;\r\n Prepares various reports;\r\n Coordinates and/or participates in remand to custody as necessary;\r\n Acts as liaison with facility staff, the Board of Pardons and Paroles, law enforcement agencies and the community to ensure continuity of services for offenders;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\nBOARD OF PARDONS AND PAROLES:\r\n\r\n\r\n Performs tasks associated with the review and preparation of case materials for hearings which are reviewed by the Board of Pardons and Paroles;\r\n Accesses databases and files from various law enforcement agencies and retrieves data relevant to police reports, pre-sentencing information, participation in rehabilitative programs, disciplinary reports and institutional adjustment;\r\n Verifies parole eligibility and discharge dates;\r\n Meets with inmates to discuss parole process;\r\n Coordinates attendance of victims and inmates families at Board of Pardons and Paroles hearings;\r\n Attends hearings, takes notes and provides information to Board members regarding case files as requested;\r\n Utilizes computerized records system to maintain offenders complex case notes and comprehensive offender file;\r\n Prepares various repots;\r\n Responds to inquiries from offenders, victims, family members or the public;\r\n Coordinates and/or participates in remands to custody as necessary including out of state remands;\r\n Acts as liaison with facility staff, Parole and Community Services, law enforcement agencies and the community to ensure continuity of services for offenders;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in case management or community supervision activities in parole, probation, rehabilitation counseling or social work in a correctional or community setting under the jurisdiction of the Department of Correction or the Criminal Justice System.\r\n\r\n\r\nNOTE:\r\n\r\n Case management is interpreted as having an assigned caseload, performing the initial intake assessments, setting up treatment plans and monitoring client progress.\r\n Community supervision is interpreted as those community settings which provide services to offenders in settings such as Alternative Incarceration Centers. It does not refer to the general population.\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

\r\n College training in counseling, criminal justice, human services, psychology, sociology, social work or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.\r\n A Master's degree in counseling, criminal justice, human services, psychology, sociology, social work or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.\r\n Two (2) years as a Parole Officer Trainee may be substituted for the General Experience.\r\n\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n\r\n Experience working in positions that require an attention to detail, maintaining records and meeting deadlines;\r\n Experience conducting interviews for case management, investigations, law enforcement, corrections, human services or similar field with the ability to assess risk, evaluate information, and make informed recommendations;\r\n Experience with effective time management and organization;\r\n Experience communicating with persons of various ethnic, racial groups, and socio-economic backgrounds;\r\n Experience writing reports/maintaining records that are written in detail (e.g. free from grammar/spelling errors and formatted.);\r\n Experience interacting with offenders, their families, and other members of society;\r\n Experience maintaining relationships with co-workers, employees of other agencies;\r\n Experience working in a team environment by supporting leaders, co-workers, and subordinates;\r\n Experience interacting in a professional manner when dealing with confrontational individuals; and\r\n Educational experience in counseling, criminal justice, human services, psychology, sociology, social work, or a closely related field.\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle operator license.\r\n Incumbents in this class must be able to obtain and maintain certification to carry and use weapons including firearms and chemical agents.\r\n Incumbents in this class must be able to obtain and maintain NCIC/COLLECT certification.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to speak a foreign language.\r\n\r\n
