Job description

Paramedic Position

The Paramedic will provide safe and timely ground transport of patients, while also providing both basic and advanced life support care. The Paramedic will monitor patient's condition during ground transport to provide optimal stabilization through professional and specialized care. Ability to adapt to new skills and information is essential to succeed in this role including mechanical ventilation, Balloon Pump and advanced monitoring. Documents patients' status, delivery of care and the evaluation of the patients' response to care according to agency, county and NC OEMS protocols. Ability to effectively demonstrate all county and NC OEMS approved skills. Positive decision-making abilities and actions with patients and families are determined in an ethical manner by practicing compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of each person. Participates in plan of care for patients that require transport from referring facility as well as using advanced medications to control blood pressure, heart rate, arrhythmias and sedation. Can effectively assist the Emergency Department at times of patient care needs when not transporting a patient. Effectively communicates with patients/families, visitors, colleagues, physicians, leadership, and volunteers. All areas of practice and care delivery are provided to achieve and maintain top-decile results and outcomes for patient experience, quality, and patient safety. The Paramedic follows and adheres to UNC Health Appalachian's policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, and standards of behavior. This position practices under the direct supervision of the Medical Director.

Compensation for this position is based on experience and qualifications, starting at $23.09 per hour.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced and basic life support care during ground transport, ensuring timely and safe transfer of patients while following NC OEMS and county protocols.
  • Monitor and stabilize patient conditions through appropriate clinical interventions, medication administration, and advanced monitoring techniques.
  • Accurately document all patient care activities, including assessments, treatments, and outcomes, in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Operate and maintain emergency vehicles and equipment, completing daily safety checks and reporting any issues or maintenance needs.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, hospital staff, and medical personnel, ensuring clear, compassionate, and professional interactions.
  • Promote a culture of safety and service excellence, maintaining compliance with infection control, hazardous materials, and other safety procedures.
  • Support teamwork and organizational mission, assisting the Emergency Department when needed and fostering a respectful, collaborative work environment.

Position Requirements

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma is required; Associate degree from a college/university is preferred.
  • Licensed as a Paramedic in the state of North Carolina.
  • National Registry Paramedic โ€“ preferred

Experience

  • Two (2 years) experience as a Paramedic in a pre-hospital ALS EMS service or transport setting is preferred.

Required Registration/License/Certification

  • Licensed as a Paramedic in the state of North Carolina.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) provider certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) provider certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider certification
  • Trauma certification strongly preferred such as ITLS, PHTLS or TNCC
  • Valid unrestricted North Carolina Driver's License in compliance with company insurance.
  • Completion of an emergency vehicle driver training course within one year of hire.

Physical Demands

  • Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility.
  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting/standing/walking.
  • Bending, squatting, twisting, turning
  • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.

Working Conditions

  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
  • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment, odorous chemicals and specimens, and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
  • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies.
  • Continuous standing and walking long periods = to or greater than > 8 hours per shift.
  • Continuous sitting and ability to ride in a moving vehicle for long period = to or greater than > 4 hours.

  • Exposed to vibration and cramped spaces > 1 hour per day.
