About the Position

We're looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented professional who enjoys legal research, case management, and working in a fast-paced environment. As a Paralegal, you'll play an important role throughout the criminal case process by researching statutes and case law, organizing case materials, preparing evidence and court documents, and ensuring work complies with applicable court rules. You'll manage multiple priorities and critical deadlines while working closely with attorneys, clients, law enforcement, and other justice system professionals. Knowledge of criminal court procedures, Arizona Statutes, Arizona and Federal Rules of Procedure, legal terminology, and victims' rights, along with strong communication, editing, and Microsoft Office skills, will help you succeed in this role.

We Require

  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance and two years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or work involving legal procedures, terminology, or administrationOR

  • Certificate in Paralegal Studies + Two years of legal support experience neededOR

  • Bachelor's or higher in paralegal studies, legal assistant, or a related field - no experience neededOR

  • Bachelor's or higher in an unrelated field + an Associate or Certification in paralegal studies - no experience neededOR

Job Contributions

  • Assists attorneys with depositions, witness interviews, court proceedings, and pretrial/trial preparation, including preparation of case and witness summaries, depositions, organizing exhibits, and securing evidence and documentation such as subpoenas and witness notifications

  • Produces initial drafts of motions, discovery requests and responses, reports, and correspondence as assigned and in accordance with court rules

  • May assist attorneys with researching statutes, legal cases, and other sources for legal precedents and case applicability utilizing computerized research tools

  • Requests, reviews, organizes, indexes, redacts, and Bates stamps pertinent documents for disclosure and for use in court

  • Tracks, uploads, analyzes, organizes, reviews, and verifies records and other documents obtained through the discovery process

  • Utilizes case management software and other computer programs to track the status of cases

  • Attends continuing legal education seminars and in-house training to stay current with legal precedent, ethics, and Victims' Rights

  • Reviews criminal history rap sheets and accurately enters them into the case management system

  • Uploads discovery such as disks, USB, and hard drives

  • Must support attorneys in hearings and trials in-person

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid and alternative work schedule options are available after the training period based on business needs

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a current, valid AZ Driver's License at time of hire

  • Selected candidates must successfully complete and pass a criminal background check. MCAO is also authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs; drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement

  • May be required to travel to court to take items needed

  • Office setting in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations

  • The position requires a high level of concentration, accuracy, teamwork, and decision-making skills

  • The position also experiences consistent interruptions, frequently changing tasks, and handling multiple or complicated tasks

  • The position will be exposed to traumatic subject matter (crime scenes, accidents, etc.), emergencies, and working in close proximity with others

  • The position requires contact with the public, teamwork, and may require overtime/rotating shifts

  • The position requires commuting up to 0.5 miles to Clerk of the Court, MCSO, or a courtroom as necessary

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, carrying up to 20 pounds up to 800 feet, pulling and pushing up to 20 pounds up to 800 feet, sitting for prolonged periods, and repeating motions with wrists, hands, fingers, etc.

  • May be exposed to indoor/outdoor environments, bright lighting, and heat when commuting to COC, MCSO, or courtrooms
