Description
**This is a 40-hour/ week, 9.5 month (185 days) following the traditional school calendar**

The Braille Transcriber II provides support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for transcribing educational materials into alternative formats (Braille, large print) for students with visual impairments and/or teachers; responds to questions from students, parents, and staff regarding methodologies and available resources; provides training and technical guidance; and maintains resource inventory for teachers and students.
This job reports to the Special Education Director.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Braille Transcriber II differs from the Braille Transcriber I in that it requires a certificate of completion from the Library of Congress, or equivalent, in Braille transcription, works under less direct supervision, and provides training and/or direction to other staff in support of the program.
Examples of Duties
  1. Generates reverse Braille translation for the purpose of providing transcription for use by sighted persons.
  2. Maintains library of Braille transcriptions, books, and other visually impaired materials (e.g. catalogs, materials, checks in/out, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of required items and documenting annual utilization.
  3. Operates a variety of office and Braille equipment (e.g. copier, bookbinder, paper cutter, Braille embosser, computer and assigned software, swell form machine, etc.) for the purpose of supporting students with visual impairments.
  4. Prepares and maintains Braille materials inventory for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reliable information, and/or maintaining accurate records.
  5. Prepares materials in large type print and transcribes printed educational materials and/or oral instructions into appropriate format/method for partially sighted students and/or teachers (e.g. copies or type tests, study/instructional materials, lessons, worksheets, textbooks, charts, etc.) for the purpose of reformatting materials to meet the needs of individual students and/or teachers.
  6. Repairs alternate format materials (e.g. recopy, replace pages, etc.) for the purpose of providing educational materials for visually impaired students.
  7. Researches, locates, orders, receives, and distributes instructional materials and equipment for teachers and/or students with visual impairments (e.g. communicate with teachers, students, parents, and vendors; identify needs; arrange for purchase and/or loan and delivery of learning materials to sites, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of materials for students/ teachers and maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment.
  8. Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external sources (e.g. teachers, staff, administrators, parents, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as may be required.
  9. Provides training and technical guidance to the Braille Transcriber I and other staff in support of the Visual Impairment program.
  10. Supports assigned staff and administrators (e.g. routine clerical tasks, supportive tasks for instructional personnel, responding to inquiries, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the orderly operations of the Visual Impairment program.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience Job related experience is required.
Education High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from high school and two (2) years of varied clerical office experience including one (1) year of demonstrated experience in Braille transcription work.
Certificates Valid Literary Braille Certificate issued by the Library of Congress or approved
equivalent such as the National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB)
issued by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board.
