Job description

Job Summary Join the City of Baytown team and play a vital role in keeping our community connected through reliable water service. We're looking for dependable, hands-on individuals who enjoy working outdoors, solving problems, and serving the public with professionalism and care. The Meter Technician position is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing water meters, meter boxes, and meter interface units to ensure accurate and reliable utility service throughout the community. This role includes connecting, reconnecting, and disconnecting water service at the meter, as well as handling delinquent accounts by locking and assisting with meter removal when necessary. Meter Technicians also assist in performing tests on 5/8" and 1" meters to verify proper operation and accuracy.

In addition, the position is responsible for identifying and reporting suspected theft of service to supervisors in a timely manner. This role plays an important part in supporting the City's commitment to providing safe, efficient, and dependable water services to residents and businesses. Duties Connect and disconnect water service and utilize a handheld computer to obtain current readings.

Disconnect delinquent accounts for non-payment. Performs rechecks and install locks on meters when water is illegally turned back on. Assist in pulling meters when necessary.

Reconnect service after an outstanding balance is paid. Assist in installing new meter if the meter was removed and provide billing personnel with new meter information. Alerts supervisor of any suspected theft of service.

Utilize handheld computer to obtain readings for billing system. Verifies low and high readings for accuracy. Assist in solving meter problems detected by the drive-by unit.

Assist in changing meters, registers, meter interface devices, cutoffs, meter boxes and lids when necessary. Utilize handheld computer to determine meter interface device is functioning correctly. Assist in performing meter tests to determine if a meter is registering accurately.

Assist in moving fire hydrant meters and pulling warranty items for shipment. Report damaged City property to supervisor. Responsible for maintaining City property in their possession: truck, tools, handheld computer, and phone.

Utilize defensive driving training. Keep supervisors aware of equipment and vehicle malfunctions. Keeps vehicle clean inside and out.

Performs all other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Six months general work experience Must obtain a Class "D" Water Operator License from TCEQ within two years of hire date. Preferred: Six months experience in meter maintenance and water system operations Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of basic math. Computer knowledge necessary to operate hand held computer.

Skilled with tools necessary to replace and/or repair meters. Computer literate. Ability to read and write legibly.

Ability to read meters and obtain correct reading. Must get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Ability to lift heavy objects, to stoop and to bend.
