What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Packing Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packing Manager, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in logistics or supply chain management, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), inventory tracking tools, and safety regulations is typically required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and resolving operational challenges. These skills ensure efficient packing operations, minimized errors, and safe, timely delivery of products.

What is the difference between Packing Manager vs Warehouse Supervisor?

What are packing managers?

Packing managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the packaging operations within warehouses, factories, or distribution centers. Their main duties include supervising packing staff, ensuring products are packaged correctly and safely, maintaining inventory of packing materials, and ensuring that packaging processes meet quality and safety standards. They often coordinate with other departments to optimize workflow and may also implement strategies to improve efficiency and reduce waste. Packing managers play a key role in ensuring that products are delivered to customers in good condition and on time.

What are some common challenges faced by Packing Managers, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Packing Managers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight shipping deadlines, managing inventory fluctuations, and ensuring quality control in a fast-paced environment. These challenges can be effectively addressed by implementing efficient workflow processes, maintaining open communication with team members, and leveraging warehouse management software to track orders and inventory. Additionally, cross-training team members and promoting a culture of continuous improvement help Packing Managers adapt to changing demands and maintain high standards. Collaborating with other departments, such as logistics and procurement, also ensures smooth operations and timely deliveries.

Job description

Warehouse Manager
About the Role

We are a fast-growing premium lifestyle brand launching a new warehouse operation in Downtown Los Angeles. This is a ground-floor opportunity to build and lead a fulfillment operation from day one. You will own everything from facility setup and team hiring to daily operations, shipping over 7,000 orders per month across DTC ecommerce and retail store replenishment channels.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in high-growth environments, has built or scaled warehouse operations before, and wants to shape a team and process from scratch.

What You'll Do
  • Stand up and launch a new ~18,000 sqft warehouse facility, including layout design, racking/shelving installation, workstation setup, and WMS configuration (ShipHero strongly preferred)

  • Hire, train, and manage a team of 7-8 full-time associates (pickers, packers, receiver, replenishment) plus seasonal temps during peak periods

  • Own end-to-end fulfillment for DTC ecommerce orders (poly mailer and boxed shipments) and bulk transfer orders to retail stores (25+ unit verification packing)

  • Manage carrier relationships and rate shopping across USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Amazon Shipping to optimize cost and delivery speed

  • Drive continuous improvement in pick rates (target: 80+ lines/hr DTC), pack rates (target: 29+ orders/hr blended), and accuracy (target: 99.8%+)

  • Build variable staffing models aligned to seasonal peaks including Summer Sale, Back to School, holiday (BFCM/Christmas), and product launches throughout the year

  • Oversee returns processing, receiving/putaway of inbound purchase orders, and inventory accuracy through cycle counts and bin replenishment

  • Manage operating budget and track cost-per-order metrics across DTC and Transfer channels

  • Implement SOPs, safety protocols, and quality control processes from the ground up

  • Report on KPIs weekly including orders shipped, cost per order, accuracy rate, and on-time shipping percentage

What You Bring
  • 5+ years of warehouse or fulfillment management experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role

  • Proven experience setting up or significantly scaling a warehouse operation (not just maintaining one)

  • Hands-on WMS experience (ShipHero preferred; ShipStation, ShipBob, or similar accepted)

  • Strong understanding of DTC ecommerce fulfillment, including batch picking, rate shopping, and carrier management

  • Experience managing retail/wholesale replenishment or B2B fulfillment alongside DTC

  • Ability to build staffing plans around variable demand, including seasonal hiring and flexible scheduling

  • Familiarity with California labor regulations, OSHA requirements, and workplace safety standards

  • Comfort with data - you can pull reports, analyze cost-per-order trends, and use metrics to drive decisions

  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred given the DTLA labor market

Nice to Have
  • Experience in apparel or fashion fulfillment (understanding of SKU proliferation, size/color matrix, poly mailer vs. box decisions)

  • Track record with Amazon Shipping as a carrier

  • Experience standing up a new warehouse operation

  • Familiarity with Shopify order management and integrations

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $80,000 - $150,000 annually, depending on experience

  • Performance bonus tied to operational KPIs (accuracy, cost per order, on-time rate)

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • Paid time off and company holidays

  • Employee discount on all products

  • Opportunity to build something from scratch at a brand in high-growth mode

Schedule & Location

This is a full-time, on-site position based in our Downtown Los Angeles warehouse. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend availability required during peak seasons (November through January and major sale events).

To apply, send your resume and a brief note on your warehouse build-out experience. We value practical experience over credentials - tell us what you've built.
