What is a Packet Core job?

A Packet Core job involves managing and maintaining the core network infrastructure responsible for routing and processing mobile data traffic in telecom networks. Engineers in this role work with technologies like 4G LTE, 5G Core, and network function virtualization (NFV) to ensure efficient data flow between users and applications. Responsibilities include configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing network elements such as SGW, PGW, MME, AMF, and UPF. This role requires expertise in protocols like GTP, Diameter, and SCTP, as well as experience with cloud-based core network solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Packet Core position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packet Core specialist, you need a strong grasp of mobile telecommunications concepts, IP networking, and experience with packet core architectures like 3G/4G/5G EPC or 5GC, often supported by a degree in telecommunications, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Cisco or Juniper routers, Wireshark for packet analysis, and vendor-specific solutions (e.g., Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei) is frequently required, alongside certifications like CCNA, CCNP, or vendor equivalents. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure reliable network performance, swift resolution of technical issues, and effective collaboration with cross-functional engineering and operations teams.

What are some typical responsibilities for a Packet Core engineer day-to-day?

A Packet Core engineer typically manages, configures, and optimizes the mobile core network infrastructure that supports data, voice, and multimedia traffic. Daily tasks include monitoring network health, troubleshooting and resolving issues, implementing upgrades or patches, and participating in network expansion projects. They also collaborate closely with radio, transport, and software teams to maintain seamless network operations and support new service rollouts. This role often requires responding to incidents promptly and conducting root cause analysis to prevent recurrence. As technologies evolve rapidly, staying current with industry trends and best practices is also a key part of the job.
