How much do pcb design jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb design in the United States is $100,705.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is PCB design?

PCB design, or Printed Circuit Board design, is the process of creating the layout and schematics for circuit boards used to connect electronic components. This involves designing the electrical pathways and placing components on a board to ensure proper functionality, reliability, and manufacturability. PCB designers use specialized software to create detailed blueprints that guide the manufacturing process. Effective PCB design is crucial for the performance and durability of electronic devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Designer, you need expertise in electronics fundamentals, circuit design, and PCB layout principles, often supported by an engineering degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD is crucial, along with knowledge of design for manufacturability and industry standards. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure reliable, manufacturable PCB designs that meet technical requirements and project deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB designers when working with cross-functional teams?

PCB Designers often collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams throughout the product development cycle. One of the main challenges is effectively communicating design requirements and constraints to team members with different technical backgrounds. Misalignment on component placement, board size, or manufacturing limitations can lead to design revisions and project delays. Clear documentation, regular meetings, and the use of collaborative design tools typically help overcome these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow.

What is the difference between Pcb Design vs Pcb Manufacturing?

AspectPcb DesignPcb Manufacturing
Primary FocusCreating circuit layouts and schematicsProducing physical printed circuit boards from designs
Skills & CertificationsElectronics design, CAD tools, PCB standardsManufacturing processes, quality control, fabrication techniques
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, engineering officesManufacturing plants, fabrication facilities
Industry UsageElectronics design firms, OEMsPCB fabrication companies, contract manufacturers

While Pcb Design involves creating the electronic layout and schematics, Pcb Manufacturing focuses on producing the physical boards based on those designs. Both roles are essential in the electronics supply chain but require different skill sets and work environments.

Is PCB design a good career?

PCB design is a specialized engineering role involving creating printed circuit board layouts using CAD tools like Altium Designer or Eagle. It offers opportunities in electronics development, with demand driven by advancements in consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries. Success typically requires technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of electronic components and manufacturing processes.

What is the role of a PCB designer?

A PCB designer is responsible for creating the layout and schematic diagrams of printed circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle to ensure the design meets electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements. Their work involves collaboration with engineers and often requires knowledge of electronic components and industry standards.

Summary

This PCB Design Engineer position is responsible for the design and drafting of high-performance printed circuit boards used in complex RF and Microwave components and systems.  This role is critical to ensuring electrical performance, manufacturability, and reliability of designs operating from MHz through multi-GHz frequencies.

Job Description:

  • Design and develop single and multilayer PCB layouts for RF, mixed-signal, analog, and digital circuits utilizing industry best practices.
  • Implement controlled impedance structures (microstrip, stripline, CPWG) and transmission line matching.
  • Optimize component placement and routing for signal integrity, isolation, and minimal parasitics.
  • Address RF-specific challenges such as grounding strategies, shielding, and coupling mitigation.
  • Translate schematics into layouts that preserve phase noise, isolation, minimize spurs, address thermal issues and maintain signal fidelity.
  • Work closely with other engineers to ensure layout supports filter response, oscillator stability, and low-noise performance.
  • Apply best practices for minimizing EMI/EMC and crosstalk in dense RF environments
  • Generate complete fabrication and assembly packages including:
    • Gerber/ODB++ files
    • Drill files and stack-up definitions
    • Fabrication drawings and notes
    • Assembly drawings
  • Define PCB stack-ups including RF laminates (e.g., Rogers) and hybrid constructions.
  • Understand dielectric properties, loss tangent, and their impact on RF performance.
  • Collaborate with fabricators to ensure compliance with requirements, manufacturability, and cost targets.
  • Support design reviews, including layout reviews and tolerance analysis.
