What is PCB design?

PCB design, or Printed Circuit Board design, is the process of creating the layout and schematics for circuit boards used to connect electronic components. This involves designing the electrical pathways and placing components on a board to ensure proper functionality, reliability, and manufacturability. PCB designers use specialized software to create detailed blueprints that guide the manufacturing process. Effective PCB design is crucial for the performance and durability of electronic devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Designer, you need expertise in electronics fundamentals, circuit design, and PCB layout principles, often supported by an engineering degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD is crucial, along with knowledge of design for manufacturability and industry standards. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure reliable, manufacturable PCB designs that meet technical requirements and project deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB designers when working with cross-functional teams?

PCB Designers often collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams throughout the product development cycle. One of the main challenges is effectively communicating design requirements and constraints to team members with different technical backgrounds. Misalignment on component placement, board size, or manufacturing limitations can lead to design revisions and project delays. Clear documentation, regular meetings, and the use of collaborative design tools typically help overcome these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow.

What is the difference between Pcb Design vs Pcb Manufacturing?

AspectPcb DesignPcb Manufacturing
Primary FocusCreating circuit layouts and schematicsProducing physical printed circuit boards from designs
Skills & CertificationsElectronics design, CAD tools, PCB standardsManufacturing processes, quality control, fabrication techniques
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, engineering officesManufacturing plants, fabrication facilities
Industry UsageElectronics design firms, OEMsPCB fabrication companies, contract manufacturers

While Pcb Design involves creating the electronic layout and schematics, Pcb Manufacturing focuses on producing the physical boards based on those designs. Both roles are essential in the electronics supply chain but require different skill sets and work environments.

Is PCB design a good career?

PCB design is a specialized engineering role involving creating printed circuit board layouts using CAD tools like Altium Designer or Eagle. It offers opportunities in electronics development, with demand driven by advancements in consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries. Success typically requires technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of electronic components and manufacturing processes.

What is the role of a PCB designer?

A PCB designer is responsible for creating the layout and schematic diagrams of printed circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle to ensure the design meets electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements. Their work involves collaboration with engineers and often requires knowledge of electronic components and industry standards.

Job description

**Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, now or in the future. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.**

We're hiring a Software Engineer II to design, develop, and maintain the embedded software that powers our automotive service equipment, while also taking ownership of the overall printed circuit board (PCB) design for the electronic control boards those machines run on. This is a handsโ€‘on, hybrid role that works directly with physical machines โ€” tire changers, wheel balancers, and related equipment โ€” spanning firmware development, sensor/motor/drive integration, and schematic capture and PCB layout in Altium. The role partners closely with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to take machine control systems from requirements through production and field support.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Design, develop, debug, and test embedded firmware and software that directly controls automotive service machines, including tire changers, wheel balancers, and related equipment.
  2. Interface software with sensors, motors, and control hardware to manage realโ€‘time machine behavior.
  3. Own overall PCB design for embedded control boards โ€” schematic capture, layout, and design documentation using Altium Designer.
  4. Generate fabrication, assembly, and production drawings and documentation to support PCB manufacture.
  5. Select components and support BOM generation, working with sourcing and manufacturing on cost, availability, and obsolescence.
  6. Conduct handsโ€‘on testing and troubleshooting directly on physical machines and control boards, both on the shop floor and in the lab.
  7. Lead boardโ€‘level and componentโ€‘level testing through development and into postโ€‘production to identify issues and root causes.
  8. Collaborate with mechanical and manufacturing engineering on board form factor, connector placement, enclosure fit, and assembly.
  9. Participate in code and design reviews, and support DFMEA / PFMEA practices for both software and electrical design.
  10. Ensure embedded software and PCB designs meet performance, reliability, and quality standards under realโ€‘world, physical operating conditions.
  11. Work crossโ€‘functionally with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams from concept through production launch and field support.
EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 4โ€“8 years of professional experience combining embedded software development with electrical or PCB design work with handsโ€‘on machineโ€‘control and hardware background.
  • Handsโ€‘on professional experience developing embedded software that controls physical hardware/devices required. This is not a web development role, and candidates without direct hardwareโ€‘facing experience will not be considered.
  • C# / .NET or C/C++ experience applied to embedded or Windowsโ€‘based machine control applications, not general web/enterprise development.
  • Working experience with Altium Designer for schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Basic electrical design skills: component selection, circuit fundamentals, and generating schematic, layout, and fabrication documentation.
  • Experience with boardโ€‘level and componentโ€‘level testing.
  • Strong objectโ€‘oriented and embedded programming and software design knowledge.
  • Git and bugโ€‘tracking experience; Atlassian a plus.
  • Able to work independently and manage the full lifecycle of hardwareโ€‘integrated systems, from firmware through board design.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced Altium features including circuit simulation, BOM management, and parts libraries.
  • Experience with soldering and throughโ€‘hole/SMT placement.
  • Experience generating DFMEA & PFMEA documentation.
  • Android or Linux experience.
  • .NET MAUI / Xamarin Forms and MVVM design.
  • Experience with electrical test and measurement equipment, and building boardโ€‘level test fixtures.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
