Pcb Design Manager information

What does a PCB Design Manager do?

A PCB Design Manager oversees the design and development of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for electronic products. They lead a team of designers and engineers, ensuring that PCB layouts meet technical specifications, industry standards, and project deadlines. Their responsibilities include project planning, coordinating with other departments, reviewing designs for quality assurance, and staying updated on the latest design tools and manufacturing processes. Strong leadership, technical expertise, and communication skills are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB Design Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Design Manager, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, expertise in PCB layout and design principles, and experience leading technical teams, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD tools like Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor Graphics, and familiarity with industry standards such as IPC, are typically required. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills help drive team performance and coordinate cross-functional efforts. These skills ensure high-quality, timely PCB designs that meet technical requirements and business objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB Design Managers, and how can they be addressed?

PCB Design Managers often face challenges such as balancing tight project deadlines with the complexity of modern circuit designs, ensuring effective communication between multidisciplinary teams, and keeping up with rapidly evolving design tools and standards. Successfully addressing these issues often involves implementing robust project management practices, fostering open collaboration between electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams, and prioritizing ongoing professional development for the design team. Staying proactive about potential issues and maintaining clear documentation are also crucial for ensuring project success.

What is the difference between Pcb Design Manager vs Pcb Design Engineer?

AspectPcb Design ManagerPcb Design Engineer

Shape the Foundation of Every Great PCB Design

In electronics, great designs start with great libraries — and we’re looking for someone who can build and protect that foundation. As our PCB design engineer, you’ll lead the creation, governance, and optimization of the component libraries that drive our products from concept to manufacturing

Why This Role Matters

Your work will directly influence our design efficiency, product quality, and time-to-market. You won’t just maintain libraries — you’ll set the standards, automate the processes, and guide the engineering team toward PCB design excellence.

What You’ll Do

  • Create, Maintain & Manage electronic component library databases used in printed circuit board (PCB) design.
  • Prepare Schematic symbols, PCB footprints, and 3D models per IPC standards and using company Checklists.
  • Implement and enforce library processes, naming conventions, and revision controls.
  • Ensure that these libraries are accurate, up-to-date, and compatible with various design tools and manufacturing processes.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of component libraries, identifying and correcting any errors or inconsistencies.
  • Ability to execute on schedules for Part creation request for Electronics Library.
  • Resolve library issues as they arise.
  • Experience with designing Complex IC packages like BGA, CSP, WLCSP, etc.
  • Administer CAD libraries and integrate them with PLM/PDM systems.
  • Good understanding of DFA, DFM, and DFT practices.
  • Closely work with Schematic and PCB designers.
  • Familiarity with Mechanical drawings.
  • Mentor designers and ensure consistent use of libraries across the company.
  • Knowledge of PCB manufacturing processes, industry standards and regulations (IPC, RoHS, JEDEC, REACH, UL).
  • Knowledge of various soldering processes - e.g. Wave Soldering, SMT Reflow soldering, etc.
  • Experience in IEEE standards for schematic symbol creation, PCB Library Creation as per IPC SM-7351B [3-Tier CAD library system].
  • Work closely with design, procurement, and manufacturing engineers to ensure compliance with DFA, DFM, and DFT practices.

Bonus Points For

  • High-speed, RF, or industry-specific PCB design knowledge in Altium and Cadence
  • Integration experience with supplier data platforms (Octopart, SiliconExpert).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities.
  • The electronics industry is constantly evolving, so staying updated with new components and technologies is essential.
