Laboratory Equipment Repair Technician

Location: Murrieta, CA (Surplus Solutions LLC)

Reports To: Manager, Field Service Engineering

Job Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

Surplus Solutions is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Laboratory Equipment Repair Technician to join our Technical Services team in Murrieta, CA.

This position is responsible for evaluating, troubleshooting, repairing, refurbishing, calibrating, and functionally testing a wide variety of laboratory and life science instruments for resale. Equipment includes analytical systems, liquid handling platforms, centrifuges, plate readers, PCR instruments, imaging systems, incubators, and other laboratory equipment.

The ideal candidate enjoys solving technical problems, learning new technologies, and working on a constantly changing variety of scientific instruments.

This role is primarily based in our Murrieta facility with approximately 20% local travel for customer installations, service calls, preventive maintenance, and equipment evaluations. Occasional overnight travel may be required for training, customer support, or company meetings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate incoming laboratory equipment anddeterminerepair requirements.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, fluidic, and software-related issues.
  • Repair, refurbish, calibrate, and functionally test laboratory instruments.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot manufacturer software and instrument communication.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and equipment verification.
  • Document repairs, testing procedures,Writing SOPs,and service activities.
  • Assistin developing standardized refurbishment and testing procedures.
  • Collaborate with warehouse, sales, engineering, and field service teams.
  • Provide occasional on-site technical support and equipment installations.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

Equipment & Software

The successful candidate will work with a broad range of laboratory instrumentation, including analytical instruments (HPLC, UHPLC, FPLC, GC), centrifuges, liquid handling systems, PCR and qPCR instruments, plate readers, flow cytometers, imaging systems, incubators, environmental chambers, and other life science equipment.

Experience using manufacturer diagnostic and control software is highly desirable, including chromatography data systems, automation software, instrument control software, and Windows-based applications.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree, technical certification, military electronics training, or related education preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience repairing, servicing, or troubleshooting laboratory equipment, biomedical equipment, industrial electronics, or similar technical systems.Or equivalent hands-on experience in electronics, instrumentation, or engineering technology.
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, and electronic troubleshooting.

Technical Skills

  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience using diagnostic tools and test equipment.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Basic networking and instrument communication knowledge.
  • Ability to interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • Strong communicationand customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work around laboratory equipment for extended periods.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with one or more of the following is preferred:

  • Analytical instrumentation (HPLC, UHPLC, FPLC, GC, LC/MS)
  • Laboratory automation systems
