Job description

2028-2029 Breast Imaging Fellowship

The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, Breast Imaging Division at the University of Virginia, seeks candidates to fill multiple Clinical Instructor positions to begin July 1, 2028. This one-year post-graduate fellowship program focuses on all aspects of breast imaging, including screening and diagnostic mammography (including tomosynthesis), contrast-enhanced mammography, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI. Image guided breast procedures that are performed include stereotactic, tomosynthesis guided, ultrasound guided, and MRI guided core biopsies and wire/radioseed localizations.

For individuals looking for additional opportunities during fellowship, the UVA Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging provides final reads to our ED patients on a 24/7 basis with overnight coverage being provided by attendings and fellows who elect to participate in the program. Overnight work can be performed from home, and includes subspecialty attending back-up as needed. This optional program bolsters income in a comfortable environment, while promoting the maintenance and further development of general radiology skills in preparation for boards and practice.

University of Virginia Health is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, a beautiful and highly desirable location of the Mid-Atlantic region, two hours' drive from Washington, D.C., with the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. It is consistently rated as one of the best US cities to live in, based on cost of living, climate, and quality of life. Affiliation with the University of Virginia provides the opportunity for constant exposure to athletic, cultural, and social events. UVA Health ranks in the top 100 hospitals in the country according to US News and World Report, and it is recognized as one of the "best benchmark hospitals".

Candidates must have an MD or equivalent and have successfully completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at an ACGME accredited institution or successfully completed a diagnostic radiology residency accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Application review begins October 1, 2026 and opportunities for interviews will be extended starting November 1, 2026. Exceptions to the SCARD embargo include: applicants whose spouse/domestic partner is also applying for a medical fellowship in the same year, internal candidates, military candidates, and international candidates.

The position will remain open until filled. Candidates may elect one of two options to apply for this position:

  • Through the FellowshipCAS platform endorsed by the Society of Breast Imaging. Candidates start and submit their applications through the FellowshipsCAS Applicant Portal.
  • Through the University of Virginia platform.

For full consideration, applications must include a curriculum vitae, cover letter/personal statement, three current letters of recommendation, USMLE Transcript which includes Step I, II, and III scores (or equivalent), and ECFMG (if applicable). The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment. For questions about the position, please contact Karen Hyde, Fellowship Program Administrator, via email at grm4na@uvahealth.org. The University of Virginia is an equal opportunity employer. All interested persons are encouraged to apply, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
