Overnight Lidar Mapping information

What is overnight LiDAR mapping?

Overnight LiDAR mapping refers to the process of using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology to collect high-resolution spatial data during nighttime hours. This work is often carried out at night to minimize interference from vehicles, pedestrians, and other daytime activities, resulting in cleaner and more accurate data. The collected data can be used for applications such as topographic mapping, infrastructure inspection, and urban planning. Overnight shifts may be required to operate LiDAR equipment, process data, and ensure project deadlines are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight LiDAR mapping technician?

To excel as an Overnight Lidar Mapping Technician, you need strong geospatial knowledge, technical proficiency in lidar data collection, and a background in GIS or surveying, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with lidar hardware, GPS systems, mapping software (like ArcGIS or Global Mapper), and data processing tools is essential. Attention to detail, adaptability to night shifts, and strong problem-solving skills help you manage field challenges and ensure data accuracy. These competencies ensure reliable data acquisition and processing, which are critical for producing high-quality mapping deliverables on tight schedules.

What is the difference between Overnight Lidar Mapping vs Drone Surveyor?

AspectOvernight Lidar MappingDrone Surveyor
CredentialsLiDAR certification, GIS knowledgeDrone pilot license, GIS skills
Work EnvironmentNighttime outdoor, vehicle-mounted systemsDaytime outdoor, aerial drone operations
Industry UsageInfrastructure, topography, large-scale mappingConstruction, land surveys, environmental monitoring

Overnight Lidar Mapping involves collecting 3D spatial data using LiDAR sensors mounted on vehicles during nighttime hours, focusing on large-scale terrain and infrastructure. Drone Surveyors operate aerial drones during daylight to capture high-resolution images and data for smaller areas. Both roles require GIS knowledge but differ in equipment, environment, and application scope.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in overnight LiDAR mapping roles?

Overnight LiDAR mapping professionals often encounter challenges related to working non-traditional hours, such as managing fatigue and maintaining high levels of attention during nighttime operations. Additionally, they must be vigilant about equipment functionality and data quality in varying weather and lighting conditions. Collaboration with remote daytime teams is crucial to ensure smooth data transfer and project continuity. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and contributing to successful mapping projects.

This is a senior-level opportunity for an experienced surveying professional who's ready to guide project teams, manage complex survey operations, and ensure high-quality deliverables across a range of geospatial and construction-related projects.

As Survey Manager, you'll provide leadership and technical direction to a multi-disciplined team of field surveyors, CAD technicians, and project staff. You'll oversee the planning, execution, and quality control of survey projects while maintaining strong client relationships and supporting business growth. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll balance field oversight, team development, and project management - all within a collaborative environment built on ARM's core values of precision, responsiveness, and integrity.

Location: This opportunity can be based out of any ARM Group office location.

Requirements

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage all survey operations, including field crews and office production.
  • Lead boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, as-built, and construction layout surveys across diverse projects.
  • Review, approve, and ensure quality of survey drawings, legal descriptions, plats, and CAD deliverables.
  • Coordinate with engineering, geotechnical, and construction teams to ensure alignment between design intent and field execution.
  • Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets, and monitor performance against those metrics.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to survey staff and promote professional growth within the team.
  • Maintain strong client relationships and contribute to proposals, project pursuits, and new business opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with field safety, QA/QC, and regulatory standards.
  • Stay current with emerging survey technologies (GPS/GNSS, robotic total stations, LiDAR, UAV mapping) and drive continuous improvement.

Base Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 10+ years of progressive surveying experience, including 3-5 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Current Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license (or ability to obtain via reciprocity).
  • Expertise with AutoCAD Civil 3D, GPS/GNSS systems, robotic total stations, and survey data processing software.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple crews, projects, and deadlines.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.

Preferred:

  • Multi-state PLS licensure (PA, VA, NY, NJ, MD, WV).
  • Experience with UAV/drone-based surveys, LiDAR processing, and 3D modeling.
  • Proven track record in business development and client engagement.
  • Prior experience in a consulting or A/E/C firm environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Field-based position requiring work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round.
  • Frequent travel to job sites within the region including occasional overnight travel required.
