Job description

Overview
The Executive Director & Military Outreach reports directly to the Vice President of Operationsย and provides strategic leadership for all aspects of branch operations, includingย budget development, membership sales and retention, fiscal management, facilityย operations, program development, marketing, volunteer and staff development,ย strategic planning, personnel administration, annual campaign fundraising, riskย management, and Advisory Board engagement. The Executive Director & Military Outreach isย responsible for ensuring operational excellence, financial sustainability, andย exceptional member experiences while advancing the YMCA's mission and strategicย priorities.ย In addition, the Executive Director & Military Outreach leads the YMCA's military outreach andย Armed Services YMCA initiatives by developing and maintaining strong relationshipsย with military installation leadership, military-serving organizations, communityย partners, service members, and military families. This role identifies communityย needs and develops programs, partnerships, resources, and events that supportย military families both on military installations and throughout the community. Theย Executive Director & Military Outreach also inspires and develops staff and volunteers, fosteringย collaboration with military and community stakeholders to expand the YMCA'sย impact and strengthen services for those we serve.


Essential Functions

  • In coordination with the Vice President, lead organizational change,ย implement strategic priorities, and participate as an active member of theย Executive Leadership Team.
  • Champion a culture of excellence by driving membership growth, memberย engagement, retention, and a welcoming five-star experience for members,ย participants, staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for branch operations, facilities,ย programs, customer service, and the financial performance of assignedย service areas.
  • Develop and monitor annual budgets, financial strategies, revenue goals,ย expenses, grants, and restricted funds to ensure long-term financial viabilityย and sustainable growth.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop Program Directors and other staff, ensuringย sound operational practices, effective performance management, andย consistent delivery of high-quality services.
  • Lead branch fundraising efforts, including the Annual Support Campaign,ย donor engagement, and solicitation of funds to support financial assistance,ย military family initiatives, community outreach, and branch priorities.
  • Direct the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and growth ofย YMCA programs serving members, underserved populations, serviceย members, military families, and other nontraditional segments of theย community.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with military installation leadership,ย military units, family support offices, Morale, Welfare and Recreationย programs, schools, government agencies, military-serving organizations, andย community partners.
  • Serve as the YMCAโ€™s primary representative and relationship manager forย assigned military installations and military community partnerships.
  • Identify emerging military and community needs, service gaps, partnershipย opportunities, and strategies that strengthen military family stability,ย resilience, well-being, and community connection.
  • Plan, coordinate, and represent the YMCA at military and community-basedย events, including resource fairs, family days, appreciation events,ย deployment and reintegration activities, and other outreach opportunities.
  • Develop accessible military programs and events at YMCA facilities, militaryย installations, and community locations, including services for military familiesย who live away from an installation or experience barriers to participation.
  • Coordinate Armed Services YMCA initiatives and ensure compliance withย applicable program standards, partnership agreements, grants, contracts,ย memoranda of understanding, installation requirements, and reportingย obligations.
  • Maintain accurate program, participation, demographic, financial, outcome,ย and impact data, and communicate results through reports, presentations,ย donor communications, and community outreach.
  • Collaborate with the Advisory Board, staff, volunteers, military partners, andย marketing teams to advance the branch vision, expand partnerships,ย promote programs, engage the community, and identify opportunities forย operational growth.
  • Adhere to YMCA policies and all applicable military installation access, safety,ย security, confidentiality, and conduct requirements; maintain the credentialsย necessary to access assigned installations and perform other duties asย assigned.
  • Serve as a leader in branch fundraising activities for the Annual Supportย Campaign, including the solicitation of funds to support financial assistance,ย military family initiatives, community outreach, and branch goals andย objectives.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of consumers by maintaining professionalย boundaries, completing required abuse risk management training, followingย procedures for high-risk activities and supervision, reporting suspicious orย inappropriate behaviors and policy violations, and adhering to mandatedย abuse reporting requirements.

  • Qualifications
  • Six or more years of professional experience, with nonprofit, military-serving,ย community-based, or YMCA experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelorโ€™s degree or higher preferred.
  • Experience leading nonprofit, military, or community-based operations,ย including staff leadership, financial management, program development, andย community engagement.
  • Demonstrated success building partnerships with military installations,ย government agencies, community organizations, and other externalย stakeholders. Experience serving military families is strongly preferred.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain access to U.S. military installations,ย possess a valid driver's license, and travel regularly between YMCA locations,ย military installations, and community events.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and technology skillsย with the ability to manage confidential information, work independently, andย adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings,ย weekends, holidays, military events, and community events as required.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications or completion within thirty daysย of hire.
  • Completion of required YMCA online training within seven days of hire.
  • Completion of any required Armed Services YMCA, military culturalย competency, installation safety, security, or partner-specific training withinย established timelines.
