Job description

The Refrigeration Apprentice supports licensed Journeyman Technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial refrigeration and HVAC/R systems. This is an entry-level, union apprenticeship position designed to provide hands-on training combined with classroom instruction in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and applicable apprenticeship standards. Work is performed under close supervision in new construction, renovation, and service environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of a Journeyman or Foreman, the Apprentice will:
  • Assist with the installation of commercial HVAC/R and refrigeration systems using blueprints, drawings, and job specifications
  • Learn to install and connect refrigeration components including piping, line sets, pumps, valves, ventilation, and air distribution equipment
  • Support testing of piping and tubing joints for leaks using approved methods and tools
  • Assist with basic electrical testing and troubleshooting of system components
  • Help connect refrigeration systems to air ducts, electrical sources, and related equipment
  • Observe and assist with inspection and basic maintenance of customer refrigeration and energy management systems
  • Maintain a professional presence and demonstrate respectful customer service practices at all job sites
  • Perform work in compliance with company policies, union standards, safety regulations, and environmental requirements
  • Participate in required apprenticeship classroom instruction, safety training, and skill assessments as directed

Training & Supervision
  • This position is part of a structured union apprenticeship program
  • All work is performed under the supervision of experienced Journeyman Technicians
  • Job responsibilities and technical complexity will increase progressively as apprenticeship milestones are achieved
  • Wages, work hours, and advancement are governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude and interest in the refrigeration/HVAC trades
  • Ability to follow instructions, safety rules, and established procedures
  • Willingness to learn blueprint reading, basic electrical concepts, piping practices, and refrigeration fundamentals
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to work as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude with coworkers and customers

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and work in confined spaces throughout the workday
  • Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to 75 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions and construction environments
  • Exposure to moderate to high noise levels and construction equipment may occur
  • Potential exposure to chemicals or hazardous materials, with required PPE provided and safety training conducted

Work Schedule
  • Hours and schedules are determined by project needs and union agreement
  • Some overtime or emergency support may be required as part of training and workforce development
