Position Description
Job Summary:
Lifeguards at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and RPAC Recreation Natatorium are a select group of highly trained rescuers that supervise safety in and around the facility. Enforcing preventative measures, promoting consistency, remaining alert, and recognizing and responding to emergencies are the most important aspects of this position. It is the job of the Lifeguard to guide participants to safe behavior, to intervene when necessary to maintain safety, and to perform required rescues and care.
This position provides the opportunity to develop life and professional skills such as time management, responsibility and attention to detail, adaptability and learning to work under pressure. Staff have the opportunity to work with a variety of groups and oversee activities from recreational swimming through national level competitive events.
Requirements:
  • Possess current American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED-PR, and First Aid certification.

  • Complete the new hire evaluation.

  • Pass required skill and water fitness evaluations and audits.

  • Regularly attend and participate in meetings, in-service trainings, and skills checks.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the safety, rescue, and care of all patrons in and around the pool at all times of operation.

  • Ensure facility security, and readiness of safety equipment.

  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance, including but not limited to governmental and public relations, legal and regulatory compliance, and supervising the aquatics facility.

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of, and comply with, the facility rules, and policies and procedures, and consistently and appropriately enforce them as outlined in the Aquatic Staff Manual.

  • Maintain your physical conditioning to remain rescue ready.

  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning.

  • Assist with pool configuration changes and event transitions.

  • Consistently project a positive, professional image and always provide consistent high quality customer service.

  • Keep up to date with staff correspondence and updates.

  • Consistently demonstrate positive, effective communication skills.

  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Availability Requirements:
  • Provide a schedule of availability to the scheduling supervisor as requested - staff will be scheduled shifts around academic commitments.

  • Work a minimum of 12 hours per week including mornings, nights, weekends, and some holidays.

Pay Rate:
  • Starting pay is$14.00 per hour during the academic year (American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required).

  • Lifeguard certified staff working in the summer may be eligible for a temporary rate increase of $3.00 over base pay (during specified time periods).

They maintain a high level of responsibility and are required to exercise sound judgement in the completion of their duties. Strong swimming skills are required for all positions.
