What does an order picker do?

An Order Picker is responsible for locating and selecting products in a warehouse or distribution center to fulfill customer orders. They use pick lists or handheld scanners to find the correct items, ensure accuracy, and prepare them for shipment. Order Pickers often operate equipment like pallet jacks or forklifts, maintain inventory records, and help keep the warehouse organized. Attention to detail and efficiency are important skills in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an order picker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Order Picker, you need strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and basic math skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and sometimes forklift certification is typically required. Dependability, teamwork, and time management are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills help ensure accurate, efficient order fulfillment and smooth warehouse operations.

What are some common challenges faced by order pickers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Order Pickers often encounter challenges such as maintaining accuracy under time pressure, handling repetitive physical tasks, and adapting to varying warehouse layouts or technologies. To manage these effectively, it's important to develop strong attention to detail, follow established picking procedures, and use ergonomic lifting techniques to prevent strain. Many warehouses also provide training on using inventory management systems and encourage teamwork to help meet productivity goals while minimizing errors.

What is the difference between Order Picker vs Warehouse Associate?

Primary RolePicking and packing customer ordersGeneral warehouse tasks including stocking, shipping, and receiving

Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles that match their skills and career goals.

How much do order pickers make in the US?

Order pickers in the US typically earn between $12 and $18 per hour, with an average annual salary around $30,000 to $37,000. Wages can vary based on experience, location, and the complexity of the warehouse environment.

Is order picking a stressful job?

Order picking is often physically demanding and requires attention to detail, which can lead to stress, especially during busy periods or tight deadlines. However, many workers find the job manageable with proper training, organization, and breaks, and it typically involves working in a warehouse environment with the use of tools like barcode scanners and forklifts. Stress levels vary based on individual workload and workplace conditions.

What skills do order pickers need?

Order pickers need strong attention to detail, good physical stamina, and the ability to operate equipment such as forklifts or handheld scanners. They should also have basic math skills, be able to follow safety procedures, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
