Job description

The Center Assistant supports the Center Director and Assistant Center Director in the daily operations of a Head Start and/or Early Head Start preschool center. This role includes administrative support, classroom coverage, and general center operations to ensure a safe, organized, and nurturing learning environment.

  • Provide clerical support to the Center Director.
  • Compose or transcribe correspondence, bulletins, and memorandums.
  • Collect and review enrollment forms; submit to Intake Workers daily.
  • Answer phones, take messages, and transfer calls courteously.
  • Sort and distribute mail; maintain visitor and delivery logs.
  • Compile and submit in-kind and volunteer forms monthly.
  • Enter daily attendance into ChildPlus; generate monthly reports.
  • Assist Family Advocates with data entry and parent communications.
  • Greet and direct visitors professionally.
  • Maintain inventory logs and submit requisitions.
  • Serve as designee in the absence of Center Director/Assistant Director.
  • Foster emotional support and a positive classroom climate.
  • Support classroom staff with arrangement and materials.
  • Ensure full supervision and safety of children.
  • Serve meals and snacks appropriately.
  • Support curriculum implementation and classroom routines.
  • Engage children intentionally to support differentiated learning.
  • Participate in classroom activities and child engagement.
  • Provide backup classroom coverage as needed.
