What is the role of an optimization engineer?

An optimization engineer analyzes and improves processes, systems, or products to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance performance. They often use data analysis, mathematical modeling, and tools like simulation software to identify areas for improvement and implement solutions in manufacturing, logistics, or software environments.

How does an Optimisation Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement process improvements?

Optimisation Engineers frequently work alongside production, quality assurance, and maintenance teams to identify inefficiencies and implement solutions. This collaboration often involves gathering input from operators, analyzing process data with data scientists, and working with IT to deploy automation tools. Regular meetings and clear communication are crucial to ensure that proposed changes are both practical and aligned with operational goals. By fostering strong relationships across departments, Optimisation Engineers help ensure the successful adoption and sustainability of process improvements.

What is an Optimisation Engineer?

An Optimisation Engineer is a professional who specializes in improving systems, processes, or products to achieve better efficiency, performance, and cost-effectiveness. They analyze data, identify bottlenecks, and develop strategies or implement technologies that help organizations operate more optimally. Optimisation Engineers can work in various industries, including manufacturing, software, logistics, and energy. What is the difference between Optimisation Engineer vs Data Analyst?

AspectOptimisation EngineerData Analyst
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields; certifications in data analysis or optimization toolsBachelor's in Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields; certifications in data analysis or visualization tools
Work EnvironmentEngineering teams, manufacturing, logistics, or software developmentBusiness, marketing, finance, or healthcare sectors
Industry UsageManufacturing, supply chain, software optimizationMarket research, business intelligence, reporting

Optimisation Engineers focus on improving processes, systems, or products through technical analysis and engineering methods. Data Analysts interpret data to support decision-making, often using statistical tools. While both roles analyze data, Optimisation Engineers are more involved in technical process improvements, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting.

How much do optimisation engineers make?

Optimization engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, industry, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in data analysis, programming, or machine learning can command higher salaries. Compensation may also include bonuses and benefits based on performance and company size.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in fields such as software, petroleum, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in technology and energy sectors.

Job description

An exciting career awaits you

At MPC, we're committed to being a great place to work - one that welcomes new ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, develops our people, and fosters a collaborative team environment.

Position Summary

This Planning & Optimization Engineer position is an individual contributor role within the Standardization & Governance team of the Value Chain Optimization (VCO) organization. The position plays a critical role in defining and advancing next-generation optimization model frameworks, enabling consistency, comparability, and scalability across assets and regions. The role partners closely with Operations Research and planning & scheduling organizations to align model structures, assumptions, and configurations with approved technical standards.

Success in this role depends on deep technical understanding of optimization models, strong standardization discipline, and the ability to work crossfunctionally to resolve model deviations and sustain highquality, governed analytical capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Defines, maintains, and evolves standard modeling frameworks, structures, and requirements for enterprise planning and optimization tools (e.g., Aspen PIMS, Aspen APS, Aspen PSCP, AIMMS), in partnership with the Operations Research team.

  • Works closely with planning, scheduling, and optimization teams to align model structures, assumptions, and configurations with approved standards.

  • Leads efforts to harmonize model logic, constraints, and inputs across regions and assets to enable consistency, comparability, and scalability.

  • Provides technical guidance and handson support during deployment and configuration of standardized models at regional and asset levels.

  • Ensures model configurations comply with approved technical standards, coordinating with governance and standards coordination roles for formal changecontrol routing and documentation.

  • Participates in model exception and deviation reviews, providing technical analysis and recommendations for resolution or escalation through governance channels.

  • Documents model assumptions, configurations, constraints, and decision logic to support transparency, auditability, and repeatability.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve model robustness, maintainability, and performance within established standardization frameworks, escalating ideas that require nonstandard approaches to the innovation team.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.

Minimum Experience

  • Four (4) or more years of experience working with planning and optimization models in tools such as Aspen PIMS, Aspen APS, Aspen PSCP, AIMMS, or similar platforms.

Skills

  • Optimization Modeling & Platforms - Deep technical expertise in enterprise planning and optimization tools and their underlying modeling constructs.

  • Standards & ChangeControl Discipline - Strong ability to apply and maintain standards, version control, and changecontrol rigor in technical environments.

  • Systems & Model Integration - Ability to understand endtoend model interdependencies and ensure consistency across complex systems.

  • Technical Collaboration - Effective at working with planners, schedulers, optimization teams, and Operations Research partners to resolve model issues and align on standards.

As an energy industry leader, our career opportunities fuel personal and professional growth.
