Opt Optional Practical Training information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the OPT Optional Practical Training position, and why are they important?

To thrive during Optional Practical Training (OPT), you need to demonstrate strong academic achievement in your chosen U.S. degree program and an understanding of your field’s industry standards. Familiarity with relevant technical tools or software specific to your area of study—such as statistical software for data analysts or lab equipment for scientists—can be highly beneficial. Proactive communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills for excelling in workplace settings outside the academic environment. These skills and qualities are crucial because OPT is designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world work experience, making you more competitive in your professional field.

What kinds of responsibilities can I expect during an OPT position?

During an OPT position, your responsibilities will vary depending on your field of study and the type of employer, but typically include applying classroom concepts to practical tasks, assisting with ongoing projects, and contributing to team goals. You may be involved in research, data analysis, reporting, project coordination, or client support, all tailored to your academic background. OPT experiences often require collaboration with experienced professionals and may involve adapting to new tools, systems, or company protocols. This hands-on experience provides valuable insights into the U.S. workplace and helps you build skills and connections for your future career.

What is an OPT (Optional Practical Training) job?

An OPT job is a temporary position that allows international students in the U.S. on an F-1 visa to gain practical work experience related to their field of study. Students can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, with an additional 24-month STEM extension for eligible fields. OPT jobs must be directly related to the student's major and can be during (pre-completion) or after (post-completion) their degree program.
